HeeHee, I'm invading your site. I have asked myself that so many times throughout my life. I am a PK ( pastors kid) so I was raised in the Methodist church, But, in recent yrs I have come come believe that just basic compassionate humanity and the church don't always go together. The church of the past was THE community, not a building that houses it's own clickish group of believers. My father taught me that if God was not in you or your home, then church was a waste of time. The church was to assist you in this not the other way around. How's that for a start?

Don't follow a path myself, however, I do find great interest in reading about the different religions out there.

i was raised in the lds (mormon) church, but about the time i turned 18 i decided i didnt believe in it, and eventually got to the point that i didnt believe in any deity or any concept of truth at all. to me it was all about what i could prove with my eyes. i professed to believe in science and darwinism and nothing else could be true. until i realized i had never read any of darwin's work, thus i was actually professing dawkins-ism....proclaiming darwin as the truth without understanding darwin. so i finally read the origin of species, and despite the 19th century british scientific language dominating the entire discourse, the first thought that came into my head as i read the last words were 'there is a god. who or what that god is, i dont know. but there is a god controlling this place.' over the next 2 years i read everything i could. the baghavad gita, the koran, many buddhist texts, the bible, a book about Jesus written by the pope, many about nature based or neo-pagan religions, and found little bits of truth in each, more in some than in others.
and when i took all the pieces that i considered to be truth from all these many religions, and put them together, it became almost a mirror image of something very familiar....
mormonism.....so i went back to church

Ok Garrett, don't have another attack from me posting here. Since G's a buddy, I figure I owe him an answer for this question. I don't do POF at idig, and I really won't be in metaphysical here much if any, as I just don't do a lot of political and religious discussions as a way of life. That way I'm not pushing someone into my beliefs and they can return that favor to me. What is the soul? It is our true essence given the spark of life by God. The body just being a sack of meat, bones, etc. housing it until freed by corporal death. What is the guiding light for it? Jesus Christ my Savior. If I accept him as my Lord and Savior, then my soul will go to Heaven when my body dies. If I do not, my soul will be condemned to hell. I am in no way a perfect Christian. I don't believe there is such a thing, as I believe we sin by nature. It is a road I travel and try to improve upon in the travel. I look forward to the end of the corporal journey for the glories in Heaven at the end of that journey. Anyway (ahem) that's my take.

This is pretty interesting for a thread. There have been wars started over less. Meaning Religon and politics. I have had some spiritual experiences that have had a significant impact on my life and how I view it. My heritage, I belive, has a part of those said experiences. My mom was Irish(full on 1st generation here in USA) and my dad 2nd generation Ojibwe from Canada. Both cultures have deep roots in their own place -be it spiritual or religious. Sometimes I'm a fence sitter and dont know what to belive and other times I know exactly what I belive. For examle, my daughter when born had an under developed digestive tract. What that meant for me as a mom was no sleep for 2 years. Literally I slept 2-3 hours in any given 24 hour time period. Sleep deprivation for 2 years just about put me in a hospital. I lost all faith in any thing during that time period. Slowly I started believing that there may be some kind of Energy, Power or God that does not have control over the human race but has a place for all people to go when they cant find answers or need to just have a safe place for their soul to wonder around or what is called faith. Faith- that when all else fails you can share the darkest moments, times or thoughts or proudest moments and thoughts with out being judged by humanity. Sleep deprivation does very odd things to people. My spiritual experiences that have had huge impact did not happen during this time in my life. It happend almost 20 years prior. I was in the mountains near Tuscon AZ and had an incredible experience that when I lost my mind due to sleep deprivation, I was reminded of this experience one night while feeling so lost and alone, that there is (to me) in fact a place for the soul to go when needed. And it was the Indian side of my heritage that saved me. I had a vision and that vision(when in AZ) saved me 18 years later. And probably my family too. Guess one could say I am a believer in something, I just dont know what to name it. Its a place or a energy or pulse that has nothing but love, peace and harmony.

This is our story ... we have been divorced, but within 2 years were back together because we are, above all else, best friends.
We met at Camp LeJeune when we were introduced because we were from the same state (they did that LOL). We were also stationed in the same battalion and housed in the same barraks building. And, the first night I was in the barraks, he was the duty officer for the barraks. But, I was supposed to have been at the base a month earlier which would have had me stationed elsewhere except I had an opportunity to pull recruiting duty for a month, delaying my posting.
We started dating and when we both got out, moved to his home town together. During this time, I kept my hair short, but a couple of years after we got out, I started letting my hair grow long. One day, standing in front of the bathroom mirror, putting my hair in a ponytail, my husband suddenly said, "Hey, I know you!" I laughed and said "you should, I am your wife." LOL But, no, what he meant was something that had happened in 1979 while he was stationed at the base in my home town. He then told me about an afternoon he and a buddy spent at a local tavern playing pool and how these 3 good looking gals wouldn't give them the time of day. And how the cutest one ran the table on his buddy 3 times LOL Yep, you guessed it, that was me and I remembered the day too. Pretty neat that we met up in the Marine Corps all the way out in North Carolina.
But, wait, there's more. We discovered this one just a couple of years ago. When I was 5 years old, there was a major drought in our state and my dad took me and my sister out to the dam for the lake that supplied the city's water to take a look at the processes revealed by the low water level. Sis and I were playing in the spillway below the dam and I spied a blonde headed little boy across the stream in a stripped shirt, cutoff at the knees blue jeans and hightops. We stood there looking at each other for quite a few minutes and I was just getting ready to jump the small stream when dad called us back to leave.
He and I both believe that we are soul mates and have been together through other lives in the past.
