Just asking, but grandmother always said to pinch the fruits the first 3-5 years on young fruit trees so that more energy would go into roots ... old wives tale or what?

Whew, now I don't feel so bad about pinching off the peaches this spring LOL
They were in 5gallon buckets, I planted last year, they flowered, but never had a chance to set any fruit as they got "whipped" when the 70+ year old elm tree went down, so they flowered and tried to set fruit this year. Now, I still need to pinch the fruit next year, but after that I can let them set fruit?
Also, the other grandmother used to pinch out all but 3-4 fruit per branch on the dwarf varieties, which I have ... I think it was a weight thing, not a "make bigger fruit" thing?
