Everybody meet their quota yet? It seems like a slow year so far but we allways seem to get a really viscious second wave in August.

Not a slow year for SVBs here! I had tried doing surgery on my yellow squash and zuke back on the 16th, but either I missed a lot or they got reinfested right away. I pulled both plants yesterday, took them apart with my fingers (which was easy, since they were almost entirely mush inside), and found over a dozen of those <unladylike language deleted> grubs in two plants. I also found what might have been a pupa in the soil, and a few teensy ones in the soil. All of them met their end between a shoe and the concrete pool deck. That didn't help my plants any, but it made me feel better. The leaf-footed bugs are around, but haven't been too bad yet. (The season is still early, though.) Hand-picking nymphs and adults has worked so far. Had some tomato fruit worms and lost some baby tomatoes to them, but the losses aren't that bad. Hand-picking has been adequate to limit the damage from the fruit worms so far, too.

Haven't seen any SVB moths in several days-maybe a week. The beetle bugs are in full force.

4 pots of coffee as beetle spray over the last 2 days.
I may just mulch with beetle carcases this season! "Ok bug, you've been sprayed. If you would be so kind as to crawl into the pathway before the caffeine buzz becomes terminal......"
I also sprayed an SVB moth yesterday and a small one today. Didn't get either one as well as I would like, and I don't know if the coffee spray is lethal to them, but they did leave the garden area.

Am reading a free gardening book on my Kindle. It was written in 1909. It says wood ashes are invaluable for protecting squash and melon vines, from bugs I guess. It also suggests using tobacco to kill insects. Of course it also recommends using Paris green (horrible stuff, arsenic compound) as well, but it was 1909. I can get the name of it if anyone's interested; that one I found on my own. The Book of 1000 Gardens I heard about on Tomatoville; that one was really interesting too, as it had the experiences of a bunch of "gardeners", rather on the serious end compared to today and makes me feel quite lazy .

yikes. we rediscovered the baccy spray.smiles They used it as a powder, not sure why. Also interesting, excellent fruit trees could be had for 20-25 cents each from a nursery. That means the price has increased 10,000% since 1909!

Well, I THINK the coffee spray works on SVBs like the tobacco spray does. While I was hunting squash bugs today, one landed on a leaf directly in front of me. I gave it a good dose. Instead of flying away, it rolled down the center curl of the leaf and fell down into the other leaves and grass. I backed off and watched carefully for it to fly up or out one of the side areas and didn't see it again.
I don't have a confirmed kill with the coffee spray yet, but it looks pretty promising at this point.
