I have problems growing onions. I think I was probably planting the starts too deep because they would only make small bulbs. Last year I dug them up even though they were small. We didn't eat them, so I figured what the heck and replanted them in Feb. Now I have about 20 onions that are getting ready to bloom! I didn't realize they would do this. I was just hoping they'd get bigger - which they did. Of course now I'm thinking I should grow onions from these seeds next year!

Sure, why not? If the onions you're growing now are hybrids (or if you have more than one kind of onion growing) you are going to see some variation in next year's onions. But I bet they will all be good eating onions, just the same. You will need to start the seeds early, so that the plants are the size of "starts" at your usual onion-planting time. If it's too hot, you might have to start the seeds inside and move them out when the weather cools down. Onions are pretty piggy...they want lots of sun, lots of fertilizer, and regular water to make big bulbs. They also don't tolerate competition from other plants very well. www.dixondalefarms.com/learn is a good place to learn how to grow the big ones.

Thanks Laura, I'll definitely check that site out! We go through a LOT of onions here. It would be great if I could grow a portion of them.

Hoping other folks did better than me. Most of mine were cocktail size. I only got a few decent-sized ones.
What I don't understand is why there was so much variation amongst onions of the same variety, planted in the same bed, at the same time, treated the same way.
Anyway, I am growing a lot more garlic this year, so I don't think I will grow onions this winter due to space reasons. I just have some green onions.
