Mar. 23rd in the wee hour of the morning our house caught fire and burned to the ground.... Jim and I both got out safe but everything is gone, by the time the VFD arrived all they could do was contain the fire ... Jim had 2nd and 3rd degree burns on his arm and knee , he tried going out the door ---- I went out the rear window . So other than a couple brusies from falling out that damn window was not hurt. Our dog Oscar did not make it out. The cat would not stay in at night always insisted on going out , she slept in the garage or on the porch so she made it out. It was over a week before she showed back up, guess she was so spooked she hid down in the woods behind the house. She still is a bit leary of people other than Jim and I .
The house was well over a 100 years old and built with rough cut lumber so it burned fast and furious ... all the outer and interior walls and ceilings were clad with 1 by 6 lap boards .. To illustrate how hot that fire was one of my old cast iron skillets and the cast iron griddle melted and fused to the stove top. the other cast iron skillet and old tea kettle survived , we were never able to locate the 3 cast iron dutch ovens or their lids ...
We have fairly well cleaned up the mess, after hauling off all the burnt warped metal objects we bull dozed the rest of the pile of ashes and debrie into a deep hole ... Its been a busy couple months .
For the time being we are staying at my step dads house with him, He was in the hospital then the nursing home and needs our help. He is 92 and has CHF, congestive heart failure .. He was not happy at the nursing home and really does not need that for now , might get to that point but only time will tell...
Jim has planted garden , lost all our saved seed but found some in Moms stuff, some of hers has germinated.. Jim had not set our tomato plants or peppers out so those he just bought some plants from the local nursery.. Peppers have fruit on them and toms are bloomimg and I have found one little green orb.
We now have a new lap top --- had an old one given to us 6 almost 7 years old but it was slow and too much trouble other than playing games . I have been in here a couple times , had trouble remembering my pass word , besides just couldn't put all this into words.

Marie, I am so sad to hear about the loss of your house and Oscar. I had been wondering where you were and how you were doing. Thank God that you and Jim made it out safely.
Did you have insurance? Will you be able to rebuild?
It sounds as though staying with your stepdad has been a help for him, at least. It's good that Jim was able to plant a garden for you. There is nothing like the peace of being in your own green spot on Earth, tending your plants, to get away from the stress and cares of everything else for a little while.
I know you found some of your Mom's saved seed, but if you are still missing seeds I would be happy to share what I have. Just send me a PM and I will send you a list to look over.
It sounds like you are still grieving and stressed (I would be, too!). I hope you are able to get past all of this and be happy again soon.

WOW! So sorry to hear about the house and Oscar ML. Glad ya'll made it out. Jim's burns and your bruises healing ok?
Ditto on the "if you need any seeds". Let me know and if I've got 'em, they're yours.
Will say a prayer that everything settles out smoothly and quickly for ya'll.

thanks everyone for the kind thoughts and seed offers. We have planted all we want this year for the garden ---had planned on planting less than in years past mainly cause Jim and I neither have the energy that we had in previous years...... haaaa mainly age is catching up with us.... We shall rebuild ---- not as large a house as before vut quite frankly I was tired of keeping that size clean and neat--- didnt need that much after the kids all grew up and left.... sooo I am trying to draw to scale my little dream house--- not tiny but very compact...

yes cape those things are on our minds. after checking building costs and all the time and hassel of building we decided to check the mobile homes . and considering all the pros and cons ....
We have found a mobile home that we really like, and have bought it . will be delivered later this week. WE have been busy cleaning and getting the site ready ... We have 3 concrete pads left those we can build a green house on one and have a ground level patio with some type roof over it and the other might end up as a small building for my sewing and craft stuff eventually , we lost 2 trees that had shaded the south west side of the house Jim and a friend cut them last weekend and theres one more that we may have to cut later it looks like its trying to live but I just dont think it will make it but since its not near where the house will sit we dont have to take it down right away like the other 2.
so thats what is going on here ... plus its berry picking time --- black berrys this time and squash,

Congratulations on the new home, Marielouise! Using one of the old concrete pads to build a greenhouse sounds like a great idea, too.
