I don't know that I have onion dreams this year, other than green onions and onion relatives (chives, garlic chives). But I might be getting some Egyptian Walking Onions through the Idig seed purge - I'll know for sure in a couple weeks when my package arrives.
I am planning to plant garlic just as soon as the corn vacates its spot around mid-November. Got the garlic pre-chilling in the fridge, hoping to ensure that it bulbs up properly.
That was your mom's Creole onion in the Dixondale catalog - the one on the scale? Dang, now I wish I hadn't gotten rid of the catalog. I noticed that picture particularly, since my Creoles didn't bulb well this year. I got a lot of pearl-sized onions, with a few bigger ones, but nothing bigger than what I'd call a small onion. That was disappointing because they were tasty onions, with lots of flavor after cooking. But oh, boy did they set the waterworks a-going when I peeled and cut them!

All of the onion plants I have seen locally this fall have been long-day onions. What the heck is up with that? Long-day onions are not going to bulb at 30 degrees latitude.

I got some walking onions and red scallions in a seed trade this week. Now I need to figure out where to put them. I know the walking onions will need their own bed, because if they are happy they will take it over.

success...lol sort of.the baker creek onions are sprouting in the leaf compost soil bed. the garlic I planted out in the leaf raised bed is sprouting too....so at this point my suspicions are correct. this moldering gorgeous leafbed may be good fer garlic and onions.we'll see...... it is encouraging though.....

Got half of my garlic planted on Monday - two Turban types, Shilla and Maiskij. I still need to clear the tomatillos out of another bed so I can plant my Ajo Rojo (Creole) and Siciliano (artichoke). My bonbon didn't ache afterwards, but I didn't plant nearly as much as Garrett.

as a test of the super soil I may pop some Alyssa craig onion seeds and row them up just fer grins...... curious as to the growth curves of all this stuff in da super soil. if it will outgrow its norms or merely be average. the craigs at 5 lbs possible would be fun as an edible exhibition item...lol

lin can you elaborate on the bonbon turbans?grins Here you go: www.gourmetgarlicgardens.com/turbans.htmScroll down for the variety descriptions for Shilla and Maiskij. I planted all of mine without tasting, so I will have to take their word about the flavor until I harvest mine next May or so. Both of these were part of a warm winter sampler from Forever Yong Farm, which I bought through the gourmet garlic gardens website.
