This year is my first time growing any garlic other than supermarket softnecks. Now my Turban garlics are sending up scapes, which I have never used before. Heck, I've never even seen them before! I've read that garlic scapes are really tasty, but I am clueless about them. How do I know when to harvest them? How far down do I cut them off? Most importantly, what do I do with them? Any help would be appreciated.

Ooh, free bonus garlic. Nice. Hope you get some decent sized garlic bulbs out of it. How was your garlic harvest last year? Did you get any good bulbs?
My harvest last year was pretty nice, and it has kept well, too. The garlic I have in storage since harvest last April/May is just now sprouting.
I have more garlic planted this year than last. I kept back some of last year's garlic to replant, plus last fall I bought a sampler with some more Creole garlic varieties to try. They look pretty good, overall. Of course, it's too early to know how they will do.
I also planted shallots this year - this is my first time trying them. I put them in last November, at the same time as the garlic. Their tops look really healthy. I'll have to wait and see how the bulbs come out. I tasted the greens off the shallots - they are stronger and hotter than green onions, with a taste that really lingers if you eat them raw. I think the stronger taste would make them great in stir fries and such, though. I just haven't wanted to harvest any real quantity, for fear of stunting the bulbs.

Darn, I forgot to put in garlic last year, so maybe this Fall. My little herb garden got completely taken over by cherry tomatoes last year, and think we'll take the surface dirt out of there to avoid a repeat. Might try kale again, and maybe broccoli, or whatever else sounds good.
Garden still under snow and ice here, and we might get some more next week. Hope everyone's away from the bad weather; they sure got hit out east this Winter. I think w8n4dave is out there somewhere?? If so, hope she has come through this ok.
