I planted the bulbils at the house. They are on their third season. Out of 50, I have maybe 6 left. Of course, they had help in disappearing. Little hands thinking they were weeds, etc. should be to size this year!

Well Mom up in zone 8A planted grocery store garlic 8 years or so and it's still alive. It gets partial shade from a live oak tree. When she needs some she sends the nearest person out to go dig some.

Garrett, sometimes you can "fool" garlic into thinking that it's had a winter by putting it into the fridge for 6-8 weeks before planting it.
But even with that pre-chilling treatment, garlic varieties that are adapted to Northern climates are not going to do well in the Deep South, because the weather just gets hot too fast in the spring and reduces the bulb growth. If you are getting bulbils cheap and have the space and time (2-3 years) it's worth a shot. Some hardnecks can adapt to the South.
However, the pre-chilling method works pretty reliably for garlic that just needs a little more chill than you get. Most of the stuff sold in grocery and warehouse stores is softnecks, usually artichoke types grown in California. So, if you give it 6-8 weeks in the fridge, it will usually bulb for you. If you have a Sam's club, they sell 2lb bags of garlic for about $4. I imagine Costco has a similar deal. Get a few of those and plant the cloves, and you can have quite a garlic patch.
And you can multiply your garlic every year by saving back the best bulbs for replanting.

I hear a lot of people raving about the flavor of Music. I haven't tried to get any because I was afraid it wouldn't grow well here, though. You'll have to let me know how yours does. If it does well, I may try it here, too.

i figure I have a week or so till the mega garlic load comes in. time enough fer two more biggun beds and to level it off. never thought you could build a bed out of macerated rotted leaves..... the first bed I worked over for a few hours.probly 30-35 feet long and 2-3 feet wide. i'll level it off this next week or so. the garlic is 3 varieties so i'll have to make 3 separate beds to keep them all separated. very curious if my rounds... will be bigger than normal or if they will acclimate to texas....porcelains in texas would be cool.

Interesting; I hadn't heard that before. I may try that in the future, but for this year I already have all the seed garlic that I have space to plant.
