The weather today is amazing, but not in a good way! It's -20 before the windchill is factored in. One of those days where the cold steals your breath away. We lost power this morning too, but only for about 20 minutes (thank goodness!)

Whew, that's COLD!
The low last night was 27 here, which makes it a pretty typical January cold front for North Florida. It's much nicer than the teens we had a couple of weeks ago!

Killeen Forecast It's true. But it's also true that the roads departments do not have salt (or a means to spread it). Even a light snowfall can mean icy roads and especially icy bridges. Snow tires? Chains? Nope, nobody has them. Nobody has a clue how to drive in snow or ice, either. Been there, lived it - we had 3" of snow in 1989 and you would NOT BELIEVE the number of traffic accidents. More than one of those accidents involved military folks from places which normally get snow. They assumed the roads and bridges would be salted. The cops were on every TV and radio station begging people to stay off the roads and they actually had to close the bridges over the bays for several hours because they had a sheet of ice on them. They stayed closed until they could truck sand down from Georgia - after they sanded the bridges they were passable again. We also don't have the right clothes for snow, especially the kids. Almost no one has no water-resistant insulated boots - kiddies around here wear sneakers, mostly. Lots of kids don't even have real coats (they have hoodies and light jackets, mostly), scarves, or good hats or gloves. So folks don't like the kiddos standing around waiting for school buses in the snow since the kids aren't properly dressed for it - they are going to end up wet (especially their feet) and chilled to the bone. If these same folks lived up North, they'd adapt - they'd learn how to dress and drive and shovel snow and deal with the cold and ice. Or they'd move back to the South. It's okay, 'cause if I had a dollar for every fresh transplant from the North I've seen practically hyperventilate at a hurricane watch, I could probably take a nice vacation. In a few years they adapt, too. It's all what you're used to. ___ I gotta ask - is the Weather Channel Coverage of snowstorms as ridiculously overhyped as their hurricane coverage? Do they lean over and pretend to be struggling to stand against (non-existent) gale-force winds during "blizzards" or is that a stunt they reserve only for tropical season?

Laura, I'm shocked, shocked that the weather channel would hype up seasonal weather to make up a headline. Actually the cable company made them do that after they (the cable company) found too many people alseep on the weather channel... And that was not just the veiwers...

Or they could report the weather accurately and hire more streakers to run behind the reporters during the live shots.

Well, here it is March and we still have subzero wind chills here (temps in the single digits.) I have such cabin fever its ridiculous. Most days I just wanna jump in my car and drive south until I find someplace warm. This winter its been every other week that we've had subzero temperatures and subzero wind chills. This is really unusual even be upstate / central NY standards. I think if and when the temp hits 50 (maybe even 40) we'll see people in shorts around here. ~sigh~
Really tired of the cold this winter.

To all yuns having a thaw and keeping it, think hard about sharing!
We had a balmy day in the hi 50's, and have an actual factual blizzard warning in effect from 2 in the morning Wednesday (that's tonight) to 2 in the morning Thursday. Snow accumulation is expected to be between 8 and 15 inches.
Doncha just love Lake Effect weather?

Sounds like I'm in your neck of the woods, Nightmist. Mother Nature needs to shut off that winter switch.

Sounds like I'm in your neck of the woods, Nightmist. Mother Nature needs to shut off that winter switch. Could be, though the lakes sprawl a ways. Being about 70 miles south of Buffalo my lake is Erie, and I have to say with it being 90% frozen over I am surprised we would be getting that much snow. Usually when we have massive snowfall it is because the cold air blows over the lake and picks up water through evaporation from the warmer lake water. When it is frozen over that cannot happen. The projected windchill makes all kinds of sense in this situation (as low as -25), but we just don't expect blizzards when the lake is frozen. Of course with Ontario being mostly open a strong wind from that direction can dump a fair bit on us, though from the radar pictures and all that does not look like what is happening. Actually most of my neighbours are not hoping for spring to come quickly. A gradual warming with a lot of freeze and thaw is the ticket. Otherwise you get chunks of floating ice in the local rivers and streams, they jam up and make dams, and you get flooding. Usually not dangerous flooding, but seriously annoying and property damaging flooding.

Nightmist, are you near Lockport? I did a little work out there a number of years ago. I'm about 25 miles SW of Syracuse.
I hear ya' on the wind chills and snow! We're getting socked. I left work early. My 40 minute ride home took 2 1/2 hours. Lots of people on the road (or should I say off the road) having a far worse commute than me.

I'm in Jamestown, down in Chautauqua county. Follow the Lake Erie shoreline almost to Pennsylvania, then look to the east on the map next to the much smaller (but still visible on the map) lake. Had a bunch of school cancellations and such here today. Most of them due to the cold rather than the snow, though some of the roads iced up pretty wickedly because of the rain that preceded the snow and cold. The schools with a lot of walkers tend to cancel when the outside temps or windchills hit at around -10.
