My niece just moved back to upstate NY. Hurray! She's lived in NYC for the past 8 years. She did grow up in a country setting. She wants to get into gardening. She has an area that the landlord ok'd her to plant. I wanted to make up a list of gardening truths. As it turns out, some of these things apply to everyday life too. I was hoping you could help me add to the list.
Gardening Truths
The bad
1. Things go wrong - despite how well you plan or how meticulously you do things.
2. Weather, no matter how much you beg and pray, doesn't always cooperate.
3. There will be pests.
4 There will be disease
5. There will be unforeseen circumstances
Now for some of the positives
6. There will be joy when you see that first seed of the season sprout.
7. You'll have a new appreciation for very basic things (sunny, warm days, being outside with nature)
8. I look at gardening as almost a spiritual thing, to reconnect with what is real; (earth, air, water - hopefully not fire!); to unplug from the fast pace of today's society. No talking about work or other bad vibes in the garden!
9. You'll love watching that first fruit or veggie ripen.
10. You'll love eating it even more!
11. Sharing! Gardening is all about sharing; sharing what you grow, sharing what worked, what didn't and the quirky things that happened along the way.
12. Gardening is always a learning experience.
13. Every year is a new experience. Your learn new things and apply them. You try different things to grow. You have different weather, pests, diseases, etc to contend with.
So what else can I add to the list?
