Well. our new 30x130' hoophouse will be delivered next week. It is a grant through NRCS here in Oklahoma. I grow and sell to our local famrers market and I am lucky enough to have been accepted for it. Now fall crops! since I have all this space to plant in for fall( that is if we have a fall) I want incite as to what to put in it for this first year. I know cabbages are going in, and a lot of the usual fall stuff, broccoli cauliflower lettuce. But I would like to try a few things that are unique! Any ideas?

Garret would probably fill it fell of cumshaw plants. Of course that would be just one plant.

um ... my favorite is ... tatsoi! The thing with brassicas, though, is they cross so if you're saving seed you'll only want one. Cool you're getting a BIG greenhouse! I grew some nice huge Chinese radishes one year, Formosa Giant Luo Buo Radish that made really good "frozen cole slaw" as per an old thread on iDigMyGarden iDig thread with pics of big radishes. On that thread, Denninmi provided a link to the "freezer slaw" recipe. and people do seem to like kale these days.

I think I have narrowed it down to just a "few" things. onions, sugar beets, cabbage, parsnips, carrots, Things I can try to winter over, I am going to throw in some spinach, and lettuce until it gets too cold. The best part is how early I can put out my early crops next spring. all my potatoes broccoli, peas etc I can put out in Jan or feb depending on the weather!

I am going to throw in some spinach, and lettuce until it gets too cold. RRC if you stick with cold crops like lettuce and greens an unheated green house aught to keep things above 20-ish°F. Oh they will slow to a crawl growing wise, but they aught to over-winter. Its the tropicals (like tomato and pepper) that need extra heat to overwinter. You've got to be zone 7B or 8A?

30' by 130' is a heroic green house for a homestead. Are you growing for the homestead or market?
In either case I'd try first one of the shorter day (cone) green cabbages, because of the solstice, vs one of the longer count flat head cabbages, maybe some purple cabbage too.
For market I'd be trying any of the Asian cole crops. Hm I might test grow a little broccoli-raab.

Thanks, I'm growing for our Farmers market as well as for us here on the farm! ( family of 5) I love the purple cabbage and I am going to try some of the Asian stuff as well. our market is small and our community seems to be stuck int he basic. tomatoes, summer squash, cucs, okra, and purple hulled peas, corn etc. but after 8 yrs we are seeing a bit of a change in people trying new things.

Broccoli-raab is a cooked green that goes into Maryland pulled pork sammich. Mmm

?Sugar beets? I'm wondering out loud if they won't simply go to seed early in spring--late in a greenhouse winter.

yeah I'm not sure how the beets will do but I am going to try. this whole winter will be one big experiment. But that's the beauty of it!Plus I'm working on my herbs, culinary and medicinal.
