So I had swapped a couple of birthdays in my head. Damian's was Friday and his semi-step siblings was last month (their bio-mom has a way of blowing their b-days off in favor of her favorite intoxicants, so we try to do something for them every year)
So my cake plans went right out the window because the school made this an extra long weekend, and I am not going to try and make a fancy sculpted cake with an autistic teen bouncing around me. I made 2 sheet cakes, chocolate velvet with fudge frosting, and silver cake with fluffy white icing.
Between DD and myself we produced some hot dogs for the meatatarians, and a big macaroni salad. She didn't think she was going to be able to afford chips, so she made some rice balls and deviled eggs, and I swung by Aldi's to snag those chips, and grab some soda pop and a gallon dipper of ice cream.
So we were well set for the party and were in the process of setting up when two moms called. Both of them had spent the night in Buffalo for medical stuff, one for a kid, and one for herself. They both had found themselves jammed up in traffic trying to get out of Buffalo, and were pretty sure they were not going to make it back in time for the festivities. Between the two of them that made 9 kids and three adults who were not going to show up.
That cut the number of people who were coming by half.
Usually we make extra, so that if the kids are playing with other kids at the playground or kids who are visiting neighbors wander by, we just invite them on the spot and feed them too, so we had a ton of food. It was the playgound this year, and there were a bit more than a dozen kids other than our bunch there, plus a few parents. So we invited the lot.
The way the kids laid waste to the food table reminded me that this was a neighborhood where with school out some (most) of these kids were likely only going to see one meal a day if that.
Maybe you have a picnic planned planned this weekend and could take along a few extra comestibles for stray children?
