Garlic should be planted mid to late fall. It needs a period of cold dormancy to develop into a healthy plant. If your winters don't get a few days of freezing temperatures, you would do well to dump a bag of ice over the area planted with garlic a couple of times during winter. Or you can refrigerate the garlic bulbs for a couple of weeks before planting in late fall.

I believe Southern areas one can plant in the early spring... Where in the North...best to plant in fall. Also...best to plant the Garlic variety best for your growling area/climate.

W8in, In the northeast , they should be planted by midOctober for harvest next July. If you have bulbils (very small bulbs), they will take two years to make a decent sized garlic head. Reddie, I've always mulched mine with leaves and I know you've got lots and lots of those! Choose a well-drained location (raised bed would be good) and one that receives full sun. Enrich your soil with compost, and a sprinkle of wood ash. Separate the cloves and plant them 4 inches deep and 6 inches apart, pointed end up. After the ground freezes, Mulch. I use leaves, but straw would be good. In spring, remove the mulch to allow the bed to thaw.

Got in my first bed of garlic. Hardy German and Spanish Rojo, at my parent's garden. Just 50. Will be more than enough for them, with some left over for me. Quite a bit to go.

Guess i'd better get my hiney busy and get them things planted she did say it would take two years to get the really big ones to mature thanks11 I pm'd you prior to reading this Wendy. Those Corms are Elephant Corms so the planting directions above are not far enough apart, I wrote you on the tomato site. They need 8 to 10 inches apart. The mature ones grew to top 2 pounders, They should be single celled the first year. I had some really big single celled ones here. Then you can leave those where they are and amend soil above for their next season.... They get way too big for 6 inch spacing. Now the Hardneck bulbils I sent you can be planted about 4 inches apart their first year and about 6 inches apart when you section off the cloves for the second season, (they split into small bulbs the first season, their mature size is around a half pound per garlic of a 3 1/2 inch across width. Mulch should be up to about 4 inches for a cold winter climate, leaves, grass clippings whatever you have works. This gets gently raked if you can early spring but these garlic have firm stalks and poke right through that if it is left. I have to wait to plant my garlic til later this month...need that freeze to be a few weeks out from planting time.

I'm now beginning to pick some radishes,
Managed to get some Kettle River Giant in (50 cloves)
Music = 100 Rosewood = 100 German White = 100
and I too have a spot over at Dads with Chesnok Red = 75
all beginning to poke thru. I'm hoping 75% of each bed will produce Large Bulbs.

Kelsae is a long day onion. If you was a Brit and were onto their giant vegetable circuit you might gorw them in search for a prize.
Its tomato equivalent might be Big Zack...

Boxing day? boxing day? I didn't know there was redneck canadians (or Brits). How lovely, there's hope for up north yet. . We don't have Ferocious Friday or whatever it is that you call the shopping day in November where people kill each other doing their Christmas shopping. Boxing Day was a way for Merchants to clear out the Christmas merchandise that didn't sell. Plus it meant that we had a 2 day holiday with Christmas and then Boxing Day the day after. Anymore, it's just another push and shove freeforall that I refuse to participate in.
