Crock pots are good for simple cooking. One can usually buy a medium size crock pot for about $20-$25. They often go on sale around the holidays. I have even made a carrot cake in my crock pot! (I put a paper towel between the lid and the pot to soak up the steam/moisture, so that the cake could actually bake in the crock pot.)

Yea, Wendy, you can bake bread in a crock pot. Some models have inserts which can be purchased separately for baking cakes and breads. But you don't necessarily need to buy the inserts. Do a search "bake bread in crock pot" and you will get a bunch of hits. Ehow tells how to bake frozen bread dough and rolls in a crock pot. (They won't brown on top, but they'll be baked well.) One site says to put water in the bottom of a crock, add a trivet and put yeast dough in a glass loaf dish on top, turn the crock on low, when rise is complete, turn crock pot up to high. There are quick bread recipes, too.

That plastic lid looks like it could melt, Wendy! Do you have a Dutch oven with a glass lid? That would be your best bet.

There are a lot of do-it-yourself Web sites for solar ovens. They run the gamut from simple ovens made with cardboard boxes and foil, to wooden boxes with glass lids and metal panels for reflectors.
