Do you have a Christmas Cactus?...or maybe a Thanksgiving Cactus...There is even a Easter Cactus. Some people have the luck of having blooms several times a year ...for the rest of us There is a couple ways...most commonly is the light sensitive and the long dark nights, 12 hours, will trigger the plant to bloom within a couple months. Or you can subject the Christmas/Thanksgiving cactus to cooler temps around 50*F for a couple months...night time temps are cooler. Tell us your Cactus stories!

I just throw mine outside all summer. Bring them in during September, they will be blooming by Thanksgiving depending upon the color. Our days are getting short quickly here, sun up at 730 and sunset by 630 and it is only september.

ok i figured out how to get my pics downloaded so here they are Luvs: Schlumbergera truncata v. delicata) to a deep reddish violet. In 1982, a marvellous, strong-growing and very first yellow-flowered type, called 'Gold Charm', with large segments, heavy branching habit, and many flowers was introduced. (Thanksgiving catus)

I think this one: 'Snowii', with smaller magenta flowers and stem segments.

I think?--->Characteristically, the true Christmas Cactus has branches which are decidedly arcing and pendent and the stem segments (phylloclades) do not have the little points along the sides.

Lovely pictures Wendy! If you should accidently break some segments sometime, I'd be delighted to add them to my collection of rooting....

I have just a segment of a huge Christmas cactus that a neighbor gave me and I leave it outside until it frosts and then I just put it on my deck where it is safe from frost but still gets cold and then when I bring in all my plants it tends to put on buds around thanksgiving and blooms about 1 to 1 1/2 weeks before Christmas. it's a bright fushia color. I can't keep any of the other colors alive.

w8in4dave... The first pic looks like a Thanksgiving cactus The second also looks like a Thanksgiving...see the pointy teeth on stems? The red color stems can be from too much light.... The third pic looks like a true Christmas...notice the scalloped stems?...or possibly a Easter Which one blooms several times a year?
Nice! auntyemerald

My white one bit the dust! It was so pretty at Christmas time .
A friend gave me one last year she started from a segment of her reddish violet bloom one . Its doing great since I repotted and moved it out to the porch. it has lots of new growth . I poked some of the segments from my old one into a pot to restart --hope at least one of them grow.
Wendy yours are so pretty ... Never saw a purple stem one before... Do you not move them outside in summer???
