A member of another forum uses kool ade to dye wool-she says it only works on natural fibers tho. it just doesn't stain well enuf for synthetic stuff. I've read about it and both of my herbal guides have sections on natural dyes and which mordant makes what colors etc. You can use the koolade to dye your own hair too.. lol it washes out in about 6 to 7 washes... I wanted green hair for st. patricks day one year.. I smelled limy good too! ;D

I did use grape koolaid in my hair. Did not wash out. Used vinegar soak and then dampened koolaid powder with vinegar, too. Put hair dryer on baggie enclosing clump of hair. Wool dyed red with same method is super colorfast.

Over my checkered carreer I tie-dyed only a few hundred thousand garments. If'n I was to take up tie-dye, batik, or vat-dye, I'd look over at least the old Brooks & Flynn (now Dharma Trading) web page. www.dharmatrading.com/Fer my color dollar I think fiber-reactive dye gets you the best commerical value. Vat vegetable dye, is usually an acid bath, and is a whole different beastie.

natural dyes?synthetic?cotton wool ect?what's better?lasts longer? I use to have a "dye garden" plants used for dyes. Had a friend that raised sheep that she sheered and spun the wool...she sold the wool and had a yarn company. We played with the dyes...you need a mordant to "fix" the colors ...she used alum. For fun...when the kids were growing up at Easter to dye the eggs...For the primary colors I used Onion skins simmered for yellow....Beet juice for red and blueberry juice for blue.

Now I am shocked ya'll did not get my first go to's straight up. Pokeweed Berries, Blueberries, Raspberries, Service Berries....any Berries. Beets, onion skins, mustard, saffron (ya right), moss (lichens). Pretty much anything that leaves coloured water will dye (a.k.a. stain) fabric. I don't know about synthetics. I don't work with those. I've always added about 2 cps salt and 1 c vinegar to dye bath to help it set. Also dry in a HOT dryer or sun. For a great hair rinse- Red hair- strong red tea, brown, strong red/black (5/1), black- strong coffee, blonde Shut up*

Genny, kettle (vat) dye is lovely stuff. Tie-dye is a whole nother beastie.
FWIW Dharma used to have a fair library of books for sale on vat dying.

I worked mostly with plants/herbs for dyes. ...speaking of hair....Chamomile is great for blondes...It will lighten it and soften.

Wahoo! I saw the doctor yesterday and activity limitations have been removed, though I have been told to be sensible about things and build myself back up slowly.
Now I can dye fabrics again. Wet fabric is heavy!
I have a quilt on hold because I need to dye up some of the fabric that will go into it.
I had to skip my annual T-shirt extravaganza for Christmas. I already had the shirts, so everybody is going to get one for birthdays this year.
My studio is at the top of the house and I haven't been allowed to climb stairs since October. I have a silk robe that is half painted that I can finish now. Though I may have to get DH to haul water up there for steaming it. I bet I could do it. I also bet he has a totally different definition of sensible than I do.
I have some notions about dye painting that I came up with during my period of enforced sloth. Now I can try them out.
