Redperson, have you tried joining Freecycle in your area? Some areas are very active; others not so much. But I see some amazing items get passed on. This mornings messages here included a Pedestal sink, clothing, Gardening pots & tools, bunkbeds... You could ask for paint or wallpaper. Good used area rugs that might just need a bit of scrubbing with some yellow laundry soap? You've got lots of yard at your place to clean a rug and let it dry. Or new curtains? It's only limited by what you want or need and what someone might have to offer. It costs nothing to ask. Or is there a bulletin board at the hospital or the H.E.B.? In exchange you could offer toys that Lil Bit has outgrown? Or pumpkin seeds....

I have had some decent luck with craigslist. You have to be careful and make sure they are legit, but if you watch long enough you get a sense of who is a dealer and who is a person just trying to clear out unwanted stuff. Resale shops can be good too. Hubs and I found one in northern IL that we loved. The lady owned a flower shop and she also ran a resale business. Most of her furniture was dated because she bought estates from the Chicago area. It was like stepping back in time sometimes to see what she had. Best part is she priced really fairly to move stuff quickly. Loved that store.

also keep an eye out at those storage units---where people rent a building to store stuff, with this economy many are walking off and leaving stuff behind and the owners hold a garage sale type . I have seen some really nice stuff going fairly cheap. Might depend on where ya live and how things is going in your area as far as jobs and such.
and you would not believe what a difference it makes to declutter your space and just a few little changes, new paint or new curtains . I have packed away or given a lot of my knicky knacky dust catcher type of clutter. Other things I repurpose them when I really love the colors or designs----- quilts, throws or blankets for winter curtains--- an old lace curtain hanging in bath room over that plastic shower curtain. But then I have never really liked those matchy matchy decors. Make your space comfy for you and yours!!!!

OMG we have so been getting rid of stuf!! Cleaning up and getting rid of all the stuff we used to love to collect!! Like all my Coca Cola stuff .. But there is a tray with some very nice glasses I want to keep! The rest can go ... We take them to a local auction It doesn't matter what we get, our friend got 1.00 for a chair .... So there ya have it if there is any auctions around you can get some stuff pretty cheap also..... either get rid of it or get it

If you are looking for building materials, we have 2 stores around here called the Habitat Re-Store. It sells used materials from buildings that have been torn down or remodeled for really cheap prices. We built a lot of our last home that way. It also works to walk onto building sites and ask the foreman if you could have any boards shorter than, say, five feet. Of course, I was 8 months pregnant and cute when I did that, so I don't know if that made a difference, but I got enough lumber for the short sections of my roof that way.

Sometime they will sell damaged goods for cheaper, may be damaged but still usable for what you need it for or still fixable.

Habitat has a Re-Store here too. We've taken a lot of our extras to them. I was surprised by what all they had there.

There is a thrift store, junk store, antique store or whatever you want to call it close to us. I am absolutely amazed at the quality of some of the really old furniture. It is solid! I wish I'd went that way , all antiques.
