The Mrs. asked for and got a couple of afghan hooks for Christmas. These are the ones that you build your loops on the long shaft instead of off the hook.
She just used one for the first time last night to make a quick guitar strap for a toy guitar. It seemed to me her crotchet speed was quite a bit faster, and we liked the way the material formed.
Anybody have any experience with this style of crotchet? Thoughts?

My crochet is limited at best but the afgan (tansanian style) is kind of like a cross between crochet/knitting I believe. My DIL once asked me about a crochet "fork" and I've never heard of those but imagine a 3 or more (tined type) hook.

I do tunisian (afghan) crochet and it is easy. For any questions, tips, tricks the wife can join some yahoo groups where some real nice folks help some other real nice folks that want to learn. I would highly recommend: Tunisian Crochet CrochetKim or search YouTube for Tunsian crochet and anything by Kim Guzman is definitely worth looking at! If there is something she can't find, there are also how to books and can be ordered through Annie's Attic or other crochet publishers. And, finally, she is welcome to contact me with any questions and I will make a video demonstrating what she is looking for and post it to YouTube.

Tunisian crochet is super fast, for me at least. It also makes some of the absolutely warmest afghans around. The temperature outside at the minute is 20 degrees. That is pretty typical for early January around here so how warm a thing is is something I take note of.
One of the ladies in my quilt group does tunisian crochet and then cross stitches on it. Brilliant! you can make your own counted ground that way quite easily. I am jealous that I never thought of it.
So far as I have encountered, when people talk about "crochet forks" they generally mean a hairpin lace fork. That is two rods attached in parallel, the work is held on the fork and done with a crochet hook.

Thanks for the contact suggestions.

I once read a book on knitting and crochet that referred to tunisian/afghan stitch as 'the bad marriage of knitting and crochet'---but she couldn't have been more wrong. While it does tend to slant a bit, and curls--especially the stitch that looks just like knitting on one side--it's very sturdy and I find it just as useful as both knitting and crochet. I really like the 'knit' stitch for short scarves called 'pidges' or 'scarflets' because it forms a very heavy rib on the back side. When wrapped around the neck with the knit side showing, the ribs on the back are pressed together and it's almost windproof.

Ok this is where I seen it Tex thank you for posting this I have looked it up on line and well my first attempt was not good.. my yarn was black and I could not see what I was doing.. I went out and got some lighter thread and I am learning the one side is not perfect but I am getting there I know I have a longer hook ... I have to see if I can find the hook and make something bigger bigger than a skinny scarf Thanks again!

The Mrs. has a long way to go on this style, not enough time to devote to the fiber arts right now, but we were both impressed how quickly it went on her first attempt. Apparently it's not quite as known as regular crochet, knitting, etc. Now if she can find the time to find a book on rigid heddle looms, I can find out if the one I made her works all right and adjust/finish it.

I would love a loom, I have never loomed before, well yes I did with a cheap plastic one .... But would really love a loom. I just love this stitch tho I am just doing this small scarf yes it goes fast, but I'd love to use it in my plastic, because it does go faster. Will see... I will take a pic of my futile attempt at this stitch
