While I have quite an assortment of rifles, pistols and shotguns, and wouldn't want to part with any of them, my hands down favorite is my Ruger bolt action in 30-06. With its 4-12X scope, which becomes even more important with increasing age. What makes it so special is -1. It was a gift from Mrs. Camo and -2. It has stamped in the barrel..."Made in 200th year of American Independence". My favorite round...Federal 165 grain boat-tail. Used to love the Remington 55 grain accelerator round made for the same 30-06, but it seems they don't make them anymore. They were great for varmit shooting, really reached out and touched, and then knocked them on their butt, with over 4000 ft pounds of energy. Enjoy! Camo

my favorite caliber is the .338 win. mag.
have shot tons of game with the round from snakes and varmints up to eland and hippo.
i shot an eland ( about 2,000 pounds ) at 450 yards and it still had the ooomph to knock him flat.

Hope my sons don't see this thread....... we are always arguing about which, what and best.... being a hunting family... best one off a store rack is a M-77 Ruger 7mm Rem Mag.. most accurate gun I've ever owned. I'm also surprised no one mentioned a 10-22 Ruger My most fun toy. Like shooting a bb gun and a blast with a brick of ammo and an Arizona desert to shoot in. My grandson agrees with this choice He loves his too. Also have a 9mm Tarus semi auto... I don't like plastic.. part of being an old Redneck... LOL! and of course my favorite quail and dove Browning shotgun. It was made in Belgium and is about as old as me but a whole lot sweeter! ;D

Camochef, are you sure about 4000 ft pounds of energy, out of a 30-06 using a 165 gr bullet. Sounds like at least 1000 too many foot pounds.

Yep there is , just off the top of my head I'm thinkin it's velocity x velocity x weight devided by 450,240= energy

Back in my younger dumber days I could push an 165 gr bullet to nearly 3000 fps out of my 06, load was Hot . At one time you could buy 30 cal sabots that helt 22 cal bullets for handloading ,haven't saw any for years. Accuracy went to pot at that velocity

Accuracy went to pot at that velocity just bein' a little facetious about the "specials" nobody with any sense at all would deviate or substitute recommended loads. i'm sure camo uses tried and true "recipes". always wondered about the performance of the sabotted rounds. one thing i did read about those rascals was that they tended to wear out a barrel quick. i guess the plastic is harder than copper or lead. and especially at 4,ooo + fps.

That was for the 30-06 accelerator rounds which was a 55 grain bullet sabot to 30-06. If I remember correctly it was 4038 ft lbs @ 300 yards, but I no longer have any boxed or my charts. I remember one time hitting a groundhog right between the front leggs as he sat up at 750 yards and knocking him butt over teakettle, When we got to where he was he was totally disembowled and we dispatched him with a 25 cal to the head. This was about 30 some odd years ago and I don't think they make or allow selling accelerator rounds anymore, but they were fantastic for varmits in their day. Camo
