Never owned one, but I knew a person who trained Parrots. In the wild, Parrots live in flocks, so they don't like to be alone, so it's best to have at least a pair. they are very long lived...like up to 80 years or so and that needs to be taken into consideration before any purchase is made, but most of all, they need lot's of love and attention to thrive.

We haven't had birds, but do have two cool bird stories. I used to go to Enid pretty regularly with a friend as she supplied a pet store there with finches. In the store, they had a green parrot that had free run of the place. The first time I went in, I talked to the bird, then went browsing through the rest of the store. The next time, I talked to the parrot and went to browse again, but this time, he perched on my shoulder and they had to take him off so I could leave, trying to talk me into buying him the whole time During my 20 year high school reunion, we went to a classmates house for the after party and they had 8 parrots -- 2 hyacinths, 2 red, 1 green, 3 cockatoos ... while we were there, the hyacinths and 1 red and the green were perched on me and my old mans shoulders, and the cockatoos were on our arms. The classmate's wife was a little upset that the birds had taken such a liking to us as she wanted to show them off to other guests ;D

I have been soooo wanting a parrot, especially one that talks. Since I had to give up my cat years ago (still heartbroken over that) I don't want a pet like that, but want something that won't get lost, etc, etc. A bird would do well. Hubby says parrots stink; well, I'd keep the area clean, and think it would be good company, too. My Mom raised canaries for a time, and then she had two Java finches. Too cute, and she named them 'Pete' and 'Repeat'. What I'd really like is an aviary in the house, but guess that could get a bit expensive. ;D Oh yeah....there's a cute documentary about a guy who takes care of wild parrots; neat story. Parrots of Telegraph Hill.
