Not that I can really remember but my Dad got me and a german shepherd puppy in the same week. Since they weren't very imaginative they called the dog Girl.
Naturally Girl grew up quicker than I did and decided that I was her pup. She looked after me and guarded me. I learned how to walk holding on to her shoulder. She was very protective. One day when I was a toddler my Grandmother came to visit. Mom took one of my hands to walk me down the sidewalk and Grandmother tried to take the other. Girl had other ideas and butted in between my Grandmother and me so that I could grab her shoulder.
This is probably why I had no fear of any dog growing up...and why no dog ever bit me also. Sadly Girl dissapeared before I was 4, I've no idea how.

Just one?
If I had to pick one, it would be Sky-By-Night.
When I was 9, Mom brought home a large (50 lb) brown and black 3 year old Australian Shepherd named Sky from a small shelter run out of a woman's house a mile away. She had been surrendered by her owner, a divorcee with 3 small kids, when the youngest's breathing difficulties turned out to be fueled by an allergy to their beloved dog. Being large and dark, Sky--despite having been obedience trained and a loving dog--had been in the shelter a while. When Mom brought her home, the sweet thing took one look around--5 small kids to play with and watch over, Mom to keep company--she immediately knew her position in our life...instant and perfect fit. She was so thrilled that when the daughter of the shelter owner came over a couple hours after Sky was brought home, just to check on our progress, Sky ran her out of the yard--she was NOT GOING BACK! If one of us had a friend stay over, Sky stayed in the room to keep an eye on us. If one of us was not sleeping well or was asleep in an unusual place--say the couch--she was beside us. She guarded the yard, but was never aggressive beyond warning barks. Having seen her mistress go through a loud divorce, she was particularly leery of strange men...a good thing, as Dad worked nights and in a small town, a woman and kids alone at night could make a tempting target. Mom and Dad had agreed to get her just before Dad left on a trip with his brothers. When he arrived home at 5:am, Sky promptly chased him out again; Mom had to 'explain' that he was OK. But to the day she died, she was sure that she had seniority over Dad, and would greet him with barking to remind him (her tail was usually wagging, and he would laugh at her and tell her 'OK, I know, I know!'). I once saw him pull up, and after she went out to bark at him, he rolled up the window and made a face at her--she promptly sat and 'grinned' back at him...he had to get out sometime! She accepted and adored all other household animals, from adopted stray cats and pet rabbits to horses and goats. Mom caught her once raiding the neighbors barn for eggs--one scolding and never did Sky suck another egg as long as we had her. Went on long trips with us in a big red van all over the states with no problem. She was with us for 12 lovely years, eventually losing a lot of her sight, some hearing, some balance, but never her sweet nature.

Sadly Girl dissapeared before I was 4, I've no idea how. Dogs disappear easily in the country unfortunately. They get caught thieving chickens or sometimes, they just get lost and find a new forever home. Sounds like Girl wouldn't have abandoned you, she loved you very much. But even in the few short years she shared with you, she showed you how wonderful having a Companion animal can be.

Wow I have three I was about seven standing out beside the house getting the boat loaded to go skiing this little red dog showed up my brother was like shooing it away i was like wow. My parents came out said that dog has to be somebodys you cant keep it. we put it on a leash and left it out for all to see so they could claim the dog. Well I had all ready fell in love I hid the dog in the boat gave it water next thing I knew we had a dog and it was definately mine. Slept with me did everything with me. It was well mannered never barked unless there was a danger in our yard. My parents couch sat right by the front window it would sit up there look out and we knew when any one was coming home. Not sure how they distinguish car sounds but she knew it was one of us. I took her everywhere people would see her in the car and you could read lips saying that is a fox so I named her Foxy.
My parents were great people dad went and got some chain link fence to build a pen it was put under all the trees so it was well shaded. At first we put her on a leash to make sure she could not get out. One day we came home she was on the porch the leash stuck on top of the fence. She should have hung herself climbing over but the collar was loose enough she slipped out. So dad put a top on the pen she stayed in while we were in schooll and they were at work.
My wife had a dog named Oatmeal an Old English Sheep dog. Oat was staying at a farm when we met as the apartment would not let her have it. Oat was big 100 plus pounds. How do I tell the story the day Oat moved in my house lol. Wifey asked can I get my dog and bring her home I said sure. At the time I did not know it was a shetland pony. Oat was a beautiful dog we had food and water ready when she showed up. The dog growled at me when I walked by its food bowl. There was a stand off I promise no harm done to the animal but I took the food away let the dog know who was boss from that day forward when I gave the food back we were buddies. I will keep this short but Oat and the cat that was funny if someone asks I will tell that story. Oat only ate after I went to bed. She slept in our room until I fell asleep but if I got up at night she was laying between the door of the two little girls room which was right past ours looking right at the front door. Oat always wore a bandana take it off to wash it ut ohh better give it back say come on Oat put it on she would almost knock you down to put it back on.
The third is Gordon I posted a pic of him on here. This is almost all 50 years of my life lol.
Now for fun my best friend had a black lab named Cooter what a dog the stories he could tell we took him camping fishing hunting the good ole days when I had zero stress.
