What kinds of birds are you seeing this time of year?? We've got a lot of cardinals, bluebirds, woodpeckers and robins, along with the nuisance grackles and crows. We feed sunflower seeds, suet, and sometimes put cornmeal out, especially when it snows. The little juncos just love it.
If you've woodpeckers, try putting some lard on a tree; they really go after that...I have mixed a bit of peanut butter and/or raisins in it too, for a special treat. ;D
Pretty soon, I'll put crushed eggshells out for them for nesting season.

Haven't seen any robins yet, but I noticed day before yesterday that the birds were starting up their springtime chirping ... not singing yet, but the chirping that sounds like they are talking to each other :lol We did notice that the mourning doves stayed around this year instead of migrating. Word must have gotten around that not only can the starlings eat out of the dog bowl, but that I am spreading oats and sunflowers and alfalfa pellets

Charles they are so much fun to watch! We have bluebird houses all over the place --- front yard and back -- every where I can nail one up. They raise up to 4 groups of babies each year. Sometimes the juveniles from the last nesting will help build new nest in the box and then feed the next babys . They facinate me.
About 5 years ago I watched a mama bluebird teaching 2 of its young who had just left their nest box to catch grasshoppers . The one baby was sitting on a flower plant and cheeping very loudly while the mom was on the ground --- I think she had removed one leg of the grasshopper cuz it was not moving correctly=== any hooo she chirped very loudly back to the baby then flew up and sorta pushed it off the bush down then hopped back down and chased the grasshopper then stood back watching the baby and chirping shrilly til the baby finally pecked at the grasshopper but then the second baby who had been watching from another flower hopped down and caught the grasshopper. Haaa it was funny ! The male bluebird flew in then and dropped another injuryed insect for the lazy first baby to catch. Both parents watched as the little ones finally got the idea to catch and eat. It was one of those times I wished I had my camera out there but knew if I went in after it, the show would be over before I got back out.

martins followed Jimbo around while he was bush hogging --- pasture had got up way talll so there were lots of bugs flying around.
I saw the pair of red tailed cooper hawks the other day --sitting near the pond in that dead tree. watching the water --figure they saw a snake swimming round down there

An overabundance of baby starlings and sparrows right now. We also have Cardinals and Mourning Doves. I have seen a woodpecker lately in the old hickory tree and a Bluejay. I put my hummingbird feeder out this week but I've never been priviledged to see any hummers yet..

the following day i found a dead snake (cats) and laid by the side of my road . that eve it was gone, mr.hawk got a freeby i'd bet.

I'm not a birdwatcher, but I've been seing hawks in my suburban neighborhood for over a year. There are at least two of them. On the face of it, it doesn't seem like a bunch of houses on lots would be good hawk habitat, but I guess there are plenty of mice, squirrels, snakes, and small birds around for them to eat.
But my favorite birdwatching is seeing the mockingbirds chase the squirrels. One particular bird seems to have a real grudge against this one squirrel. That bird has chased that squirrel across my privacy fence and roof at least daily for a couple of weeks. Go, bird, go! ;D

Lin that squirrel is more than likely getting to close to the birds nest, either trying to steal eggs or going after a baby bird. Mockingbirds are territorial when it comes to their nest. I have seen Mockingbirds gang up 4/ 6 to run off a squirrel or snake from their area and hawks too. They will chase hawks all the way back to the back 40 here, its all wood land and hawks do nest there .

Whenever I was out in the yard they would swoop at me and a couple of times they yanked out hair. I like it a lot better when they are chasing the squirrels.
