Coniferous trees take a long time to grow. Why not put something that grows quickly? Also, you don't want to block all the sunlight to the garden so make sure before you put a windrow that won't happen.
On the farm, we had a row of chokecherries and a large crabapple tree. You might also consider edible plantings as well. Nothing wrong with multipurpose plantings.

Bambi will just jump over the blackberries. A drift pile of trash would be easiest of course but not nearly as lovely to look nor as utile as crabapple trees. I opt for living wall not a giant burnpile

Another thread here mentions wattle & daub houses. The bones of a wattle & daub is a brushy wall made mostly of sticks, twigs, and brush. It looks remarkably like a fence.
Just a thought, for any potential basket weavers who might wander through RNA...
As an aside, a brush fence won't keep out a rooting critter like an armadillo or hog, but bambi don't like to get tangled up in fences.

One perk to a brush pile is the game birds that will take advantage of them for nesting

It kind of depends on his climate. If he lives far enough north gooseberries have plenty of thorns, too warm for them where I live.
