Veiwing the world with a jaundiced eye to the fact than not most, but every civilization breaks down over time seems like an entitlement every gardener could catch. Sort of like a ten-day flu. While I wish this forum set didn't bristle with quite so much overt racism, its still worth the read. Frugals Forums: www.frugalsquirrels.com/vb/index.php

Darn. Well, guess I'll register, too. There's so many of those kinds of forums, or threads on other forums about survivalist living. I do think the idea of having enough food/supplies for 1 year is a good idea...think it's the Mormons who do that. IF something were to happen, who knows what, it wouldn't hurt to have enough for the family and a bit extra.

Frugal's has some incredibly angry (and racist) posters, you was warned. Still that said, the end of the world as we know it (TEOTWAWKI) is a mind set any responcible parent or grand-parent should at least have a passing knowledge of.
Nothin' lasts forever.

Yup. Guess they are prepared for just about anything. I saw a news article recently about people buying the empty missile silos, renovating them into homes, just in case. One guy got one for $10.000. Obviously it would take a lot of money to make it as you want it, but still something to think about, I guess.
I know some who are stocking up on whatever they think they might need in case the SHTF. Others, don't care one way or the other. Guess I kinda come in between.

saw a missle silo home featured on a tv show. i thought it was quite interesting . supposed to be pretty energy efficient also. i reckon as for costs to fix up , i'm thinkin it might not be all that costly as opposed to building a new home. including the cost of the silo.
great idea to recycle and not waste the space these silos occupy.
i'd actually like to see the home that was featured first hand to get a real feel on the size.

Back to a food supply to last a year for the family, my parents instilled that into all of us. Since they lived through the great depression, they always kept a massive cellar food closet. Of course, all the canning we did from the produce we grew contributed greatly to that pantry. I have always kept at least 6 months worth on hand, probably closer to 9 months. So to up it to 12 months would be easy. This supply came in handy when my employer of 10 years who had been in business for 80 years closed over night. it was a relief to know that I didn;'t need to worry about eating.

Now, this would be the next best thing to a silo: www.pensmore.com/The place isn't far from us, and I had the idea of seeing what it looked like, but those who drove through the area, say you can't even see it from the road below.

It might kill me, but I'll hold out the charity, civility, and amicii, of here and Not Just Tomatoes over a web site full of people who got a cellar full of NATO rounds any day.
Somehow waiting for the rapture doesn't sound like a re-employement plan to me...

So they're waiting/prepping for the rapture, are they. I still haven't gotten confirmation from that site, but it sounds like that might be a good thing, from what y'all say.

Did anyone watch this?? I will say, most of those people are quite well prepared for bad times....of course, it does depend on exactly which scenario happens; if anything.
Not sure that I would want to be on the show showing everything I had, and where I lived, whether something happens or not.

yep , i watched both shows. the only ones i give much survival time to would be the group of 22 and the family in colorado. one'sies and two'sies won't have much of a chance. it takes a fair sized group to keep and protect their stores. the gal from houston won't make it to the city limits. but i'm only wishin' her the best of luck. those already in rural places have a great head start. those who choose not to have weapons will soon not have the shirts on their backs. one gent said he will feed intruders and then win their hearts is nuts. when they see his provisions , they aren't gonna let him devour THEIR FOOD. he'll be plugged long before he can poison them or slit sleeping throats if they are unfriendly. prepping seems more like just a hobby or something to do for some of them.

Ditto on the gal from Houston. She'd be very fortunate if she made it ok in the apartment alone, but walking away 'after the panic dies down' is not too brilliant of an idea.
Who knows how long it would take before things settled down; months at the very least; and that would depend on which scenario happened.
We did see that part where the guy said he would invite intruders to eat with them. My thought was 'Hippie'. Geez, how could they not understand that they need to have protection when people will be going ballistic to feed themselves and/or their families??!!
The show does have a bit of Hollywood flair, of course. Guess we could've expected that. Going to be interesting to see what else people are doing to prepare, tho.

since u also mentioned the gal from houston .... to poke a little fun at her ( no pun intended ) she did introduce herself as a party girl. one component of her survival gear was 120 birth control devices. stated that would only last her a week with a big smile. she made me smile when she said something like she only has 3 months of stores and she isn't sure what she might have to do to "barter" for food after that , i swear i seen a twinkle in her eye and she started to grin ! why would u waste that much room in your survival backpack? i just grabbed up a 12 pack of my fave brand and it's 1 1/4 x 5 1/4 x 2 3/4. now multiply that by 10. i'm sure anybody in their right mind wouldn't want to be in a motherly way after an "event". but wouldn't ya think there would be plenty of these available, especially in a population decline. maybe no food and water on the shelves,but.....

Umm....yeah, I did hear her mention the little prevention devices she had, but didn't hear how many.....and that would last a week?? I don't know that that would be one of the most important things on one's list if you were serious about prepping for a major disaster. But then, if she's a serious party girl.....well...... The guy in Los Angeles (I think that's where he was) thinking he could just wander around the city bartering little things; carrying a few knives, and eating weeds made me wonder, too. Other than food, water, & other supplies, I would think one would think of defending yourself and family. Seems like some of these people don't realize what things would be like after a real major disaster.

I did watch those 2 shows---- as for party girl she would be VERY lucky If that hidden car was still there! LOL 300 miles of gas and she was planning on heading to mexico--- wonder how long she will last in the military??? I can relate to building a plan with your neighbors but really some firepower would be right up on top of the list . another thing --- bug out---- ok so they practice and got it down pat etc. BUT they are relying on roads still being passable. even with alteranate routes--- hummmm--- we are very out in the boonies and if it got that bad theres a few good ole boys nearby with various heavy equipment that would really block these roads and we'd still be able to move about but only long time locals who know the cow paths so to speak. Being in the back woods and all and if we have thought of it I bet others have too. Especially if things got violent like so many are expecting. a few of those had a rather smug attitude that would be in for a rude awakening. IMHO!

IMHO! just to reflect back on hurricane katrina, didn't take long for crime to start, including the authorities. in just days, what did those poor folks do just get a drink of water. and katrina wasn't in my opinion a doomsday event. when people are sick, dying and for example are walking in "fallout or diseased bodies" there will be total lawlessness. handing out flowers and thinking in " utopian " ways will get that smugness slapped right off their faces. reality will set in , but most likely too late. and for all that planning ! gotta watch the whole series, interesting and to a degree entertaining.
