My BIL regularly welds cattle panels into all kinds of shapes ... as mater cages, they will support the biggest, heaviest mater plants, the squares are generally big enough for the biggest mitts to reach through for picking, and they will last "forever" ;D
He uses his oxy-acetelyne rig.

So what do people do to build them that don't have a Welder? Use wire ties? I've never used that type of cage. Although last year I bought 3 of the large HD ones that are on the market now in day-glo colours

Well I bought a 5 foot by 150 foot roll of reinfocement wire rolled it out to 7 foot long cut and rolled against the grain made 6.5 foot by 2.5 foot cages used the cut end of the cage to attach to it self.

We ahve cages made that way. I like them and if ya plant toms out early they are easy to wrap with plastic --just in case the weather or wind gets crazy..
We also use cattle panels for vining plants and can even tie tomatoes to it ---to rotate planting areas. Jim tried the florida weave last year but we were not impressed with the results ... Its row will be cattle panels this year. when we can get time and nice weather to work out there.
