Ok, the tobacco tea bug spray discussions has resulted in me having in my hands a significant number of tobacco seeds to spread among those who are interested in trying to grow tobacco plants.
The seeds fall into 2 catagories. Original seed from PCGRIN and seeds saved by the grower that sent them to me (who by the way, has done much for gardening and preservation of seeds and has struck me as a generally good, kind and generous person).
Original seed:
Pumpano: spoken for
S.P.I. 27525: (1) offer of about 60 seeds [could be split into 2 of 30]
Saved seed:
Celikhan: (3) offers of about 50 seeds
CU2: (3) offers of about 50 seeds
Mix of 4 types - VA116, PYKY 171, Coker 213 and NC 12 (5) offers of about 50-60 seeds.
These seeds are tiny. Without pulling out a magnifying glass, these are best guess as to amounts in the baggies. The saved seeds, I actually have more than is stated above, but as I fill any requests, I'll be able to get a handle on how much of each remains and will update if necessary.
For anyone interested in the U.S., let me know which/how much you want in a P.M. and I will get them out as soon as I can. If you are outside the U.S., PM me, and I may need to do something like a SASE or something of that nature or I may be able to handle it like a U.S. recipient. We'll figure it out. I will handle this on a first P.M.'d, first served basis. This is not a trade request. I am simply paying it forward. Frankly, I have what I need for this season anyway.
I am not sure how old the seed is, the germ. rate may not be high. I did start a pinch of the mixed seed listed above, and I now have probably 30 sprouts, so germ rate is good on that one for sure. The purpose of this is to A) grow the plants and save seed and to continue the line. Offering to others down the road. B) to help with pest control.
As I understand 2 points are important to know with these plants.
1) Wear gloves when dealing with the plants, as a contact nicotine high is not only possible, but probable. I have had a nicotine high in the past. They are not pleasant.
2) When the plant starts becoming "sticky" it is ready for use in the production of the "nicotine tea bug killer".
Additional points to keep in mind. Tobacco carries the possibility of tobacco mosaic virus. You might not want to plant it near other plantings susceptible to tmv. I plan to boil my "tea" that I make from it to try to insure against tmv.
