Gotta say, my best gardening freebies came from a yardsale and the roadside recently.
Heard some folks running a yardsale mention that the house would be up for sale shortly--asked permission to take a bit of the lovely variegated vinca major beside the porch. The lady in charge grabbed a bag and a shovel for me! Got some cuttings of a weeping willow in a creek by the highway--one seems to have took.
I've picked up russian sage, a few sedums and cuttings of curly willow this way (at yardsales), some diablo ninebark at a closed store (cuttings from parking lot planting).
I also keep my eyes open at Lowe's--they have clearance racks and will often mark down plants to bottom dollar at season's end. In fall I picked up lamb's ear, some artemisia, several orchids, some african violets, a bag of daffodil bulbs sans label, etc--so far all are doing well except for a sad little goldthread cypress that I figured was a crap shoot to begin with.

It pays to ask. Even when the only thing you get back is a blank stare.

Over the course of several years, I would collect rose hips from the Union Ave, Laconia (NH) KFC. Each year I would go to collect some I would go inside the chicken palace and ask the (new) assistant manager if I could collect some rose hips. it never failed I would get s sputtered back. "But, but we don't sell hips. Just legs and thighs".
I would then order a two-peice meal and go about my collection after...

Lilies of the Valley: Well, they were free, but they were work! I put in my Mom's flowers this weekend. For as long as I can remember my Mom loved Lilies of the Valley. I've wanted them since I read a book called "Lily of the Valley" a long time ago. Anyway my Mom's friend gave her some Lilies of the Valley a few years ago. She planted them in her front flower bed. We had heard that they spread like weeds and were near impossible to get rid of. Well, after the first year, my Mom had a few more. Last year, a few more than previous, but this year.....they are EVERYWHERE! I had to dig a trench through them to put her annuals! So my Mom said I could keep whatever I dug out! It was work! I think if you braided those runner roots, they'd hold up better than concrete and steel! I do have some shady spots where I won't mind if they take over. So I'll be planting tomorrow.

gardencrazy, my Mom loved Lily of the Valley, too. I had planted some here, but they didn't make it more than a year. Going to try again, and put some in one of my gardens. I read that there are some that grow quite a bit taller than the old ones. I like them closer to the house, as they smell so pretty in the evenings.

My Mom told me the secret to growing Lilies of the Valley is that the plants need to come from someone that cares about you.

We have lilly of the Valley and they are growing between the cement walkway ... one year hubbs sprayed that one with weed killer and it also went to the ones where we wanted them .. weed killer went thru the roots .... won't do that again we still have tons , we took some up north last fall and they are already starting to spread .....
