Well, last year and this year I have been working on my perennial flower beds. I have flower madness this year - not just daylilies! In the garden right now is; salvia (May Nights), daisies (Lacrosse), bee balm (red), Asiatic lilies (a mix), East lilies, and lavendar all put in this year. I ordered irises earier which should be coming in July.
Today I bought some daylilies on an auction! I'm excited! These will be my first daylilies! Anybody else out there have daylily madness? or just garden crazy over another flower?

I have daylilies, too; don't even remember what-all kinds anymore. Just had a beautiful red Asiatic blooming, and some Stella D'Oro, very pretty. Have you ladies tried the Aurelian lilies?? They are just gorgeous; I need to get some more of those - the scent is sooo nice.

Bella, I haven't tried Aurelian lilies. I've read they're not as hardy as Asiatic lilies. So I'm nervous about trying them. I'm in central (upstate) New York and we have tough winters here.
Do you need to give them added protection over the winter?

I haven't tried them either --here most true lillies don't last very long our summers are just so long and hot and dry. I lost all the Asiatics last summer , but have one Easter Lilly left--its just now opened 2 blooms. Mainly I have members of the amarylis family and another I can't remember the name off hand. Prolly thunk it soon as I hit the reply button---LOL I have lots of iris--- boocoo colors of iris--{ bicolors and single,-bearded, ruffled-- lousianna} -- and daylilly , glads . daffs--- etc.

I haven't bought any daylilies for a year or two now, but I have pretty many from past years and I'll have to start splitting them up. Still have plenty of room for em though. As I'm getting older and lazier, I like to use them to fill in the holes as other flowers die off. Haven't had a daylily die off yet ;D. In the beginning I kept the tags, but most have been lost over time.

Do you need to give them added protection over the winter? I grew them in MN, but that's about 17 years ago, and I don't remember if I brought them in over winter, or mulched them. I know that I had them a few years, tho. From what I read, yes, you do cover them over winter. There are some really beautiful ones here: www.thelilygarden.com/pages_lilies/trumpet_2.htmlI may have to order some; and now I also found some jasmines........is there no end to these beautiful must-have flowers??

Well, I bought two more over the weekend. I'm now the proud owner of Frans Hals and Bonanza. I don't have them in the ground yet. I need to find a spot!

If you have a daylily society in your area they can be a great source of obtainig new ones as they usually have annual tours and sales. I bought some at one of their sales a few years ago, beautiful and very reasonably priced. I also have many I got from a member of my garden club, love them!

My wife's funny. She says if we can't eat it, we don't need to grow it. She doesn't even want a shade tree. It seem's more like a guy kind of attitude. I asked her one time if she wanted a flower bed. Her answer "Why would I want that?" End of conversation.

Different strokes for different folks !
I think of flowers as food for the soul. Even those blooms on the veggies are flowers...
Trees are a must in this part of the country for shade .... And they do help clean up the air---oxygen and all that . Theres a place for all living things or should be...

Direct SL-you can eat daylillies! Though I've never tried them, I've heard you can fry the flowers.

I'm sure they'll do well and bring you many years of joy! Sadly I lost a lot of my daylillies this month. We've had one of the hottest Augusts on record and many didn't survive. I'm hoping they'll come back when it cools a bit but not really hopeful. I still have a few in pots given to me a while back but they're all yellow which I love but the others were all much prettier colors. Guess I'll hit the daylily society sale this fall and start over.
