We just finished taking all the cats to the vet for their checkups and booster shots.
ow. money. ow.
Thorncat needs more veterinary attentions.
She has a big old growth in her nether regions. I sympathize.
So we took her in for surgery today and they sent her home without doing it.
Her pre-op bloodwork shows her kidney function is poor enough that they are worried about giving her anesthesia. So we brought her home after they gave her subQ fluids, with a prescription, and prescription food. Next appointment is the 21st and if she is improved enough they will do the surgery then.
Here is the thing, kidney damage in cats tends to be permanent. So we may be looking at feeding her a 'script diet forever.
We have four cats. They are all grazers, only eating a few bites of food at a time and coming back multiple times over the course of the day.
We can banish two of them to the upstairs on a fairly permanent basis. In fact that is exactly what we are going to do with them for this pre-op feeding regimen. Jiji however is a sort of a rum-tum-tugger cat. He is always on the wrong side of every door, and is a master of streaking past you ankles to get through a door you have just opened.
The vet says he will be fine eating this food (Hills k/d) between now and then.
This is not the first time we have had to try and sort feedings like this. As long as it won't hurt him I suppose it is OK for Ji-chan to eat the pricey food short term. If this is to go to a long term feeding issue, I am going to need to find a solution. Bad enough I have to feed one cat $5 a pound food, feeding it to another one just because I can't figure out how to keep him out of it is another thing entirely. Besides, I am not at all sure that a low protein diet is very good for a healthy cat, in fact I am pretty sure it is not.
Suggestions?
