Just yesterday I received my first order of irises from Schreiner's Irises. I'm thrilled to pieces with them. I had ordered a couple of their collections (Tie-Dye and 9 Great Favorites). I also ordered "Mary Frances" and "Joe Cool" for the DH & me as well as each of his brothers & sisters. Joe was the DH's dad. He passed away 5 years ago. Mary Frances is the DH's mom. She had a stroke in November and is still alive. However its difficult for everyone. The person we knew is no longer there.
I bought the irises for everyone so they could start a memorial garden. Hmmm, maybe I should have split this into two topics: Irises and Memorial Gardens. Anyway tell me about your irises (I know they're off season right now) and tell me about your Memorial Gardens!

Well after being elated about my order on friday, I found iris borers in my established irises (NOT the ones I just got). I was so upset. So I dug up all of my older irises in the front yard; killed those nasty little buggers, and soaked the rhizomes in a bleach solution (but I wonder if I did it long enough. I read later you're suppose to soak them overnight. I soaked them for 20 minutes .)
I have them in containers on the deck (Well half of them at least. I ran out of dirt. Will get more dirt and plant the other half tomorrow.) I need to dig up some that are around the deck as well. ~sigh~ At least I'm a little wiser now.

Just a few more notes about iris borers. Soaking the bulbs in a bleach solution for 10 to 20 minutes should be fine. The bleach solution should be 10 parts water, 1 part bleach. Do cut the rotten "tunnel" parts out. I potted mine in new soil in pots of the deck for the time being.

Good to know !!! I need to redo mine and know I am gonna find borers in the rhizomes. its a problem here . Usually I just cut away the ""bad"" parts and replant the new growth. You probaley already know but just in case --- iris grow in the direction that the end with the new growth or bud or eye is on . so if you need them to grow away from the house--for example -- put the end where you cut away the old toward the house.

Just replanted a few "treated" irises that had iris borers before. I planted them in different parts of the flower beds so hopefully they'll be ok.

I'm going to dig and divide my iris in a couple of weeks when this humidity lifts and read that they benefit from addition of triple phosphate added to the soil. Any recommendations on how much to apply? Thanks!

A happy surprise today! As you know I had an issue with iris borers last year. I cut away the yucky parts, soaked the good parts in bleach and replanted them. I stuck the yucky parts near a tree that we had taken down last year. This year I have about 6 unexpected iris babies where the tree was! I have them staked right now so DH doesn't run them over with the lawn mower. I have quite a few lilies that don't look like they made it back. So I'll plant them in their spots.

Thanks! I moved a few of them. DH mowed the lawn and didn't run them over the rest of them!

We had a nice day yesterday. So I cleaned up the iris beds. We've had a very wet spring so far. Some of my poor babies are very wet and soggy. Don't know if those bulbs (tubers) are going to make it.

I'm probably going to have to divide what I think is iris here come this spring or next. I did take all the seed and will either germinate it here or through Robin's give-away. Non-bearded flowers.
