So what are you doing this year to save a few pennies at Thanksgiving? I could use some helpful hints! I'll be putting on the spread this year for Thanksgiving.

gardencrazy, ""' putting on the spread"" does that mean you are supposed to provide every thing. And do aLL the cooking baking ? Here we always decide before hand whose house and our basic menu then each family unit coming brings their "" food dishes"" cooked at home , some do desserts-some do side dishes , drinks , etc. . -I have 3 kids plus their familys --- plus this and that in-laws ( included as family units) and friends who have no where to go-- some have diet issues or food allegrys--- and some don't "like" green beans or what ever and most that problem is eliminated by sharing the load. Its been a long established tradition within my family and this area . It does share the cost around, and is fair to our way of thinking. Wendy Now if WE had decided on prime rib ---we all would have chipped in on it--- so is brother-in-law doing salads desserts and drinks and any other sides and chips and dips ?LOL

Hi all,
Yes, I'm putting on the dinner. My sister & brother-in-law are carving time out to see me and are swooping in to pick up our Mom to bring her to Thanksgiving dinner. It's about a 6-7 hour drive for them. So I didn't want them to bring anything else. My Mom use to be a good home cook, but has lost her touch. I do worry about the cleanliness (I cleaned pickle jars out of her frig recently that were from 2004, not to mention the items that were no longer food) of her place although she does have a cleaning lady now.
So I'll be doing the whole dinner. There should only be between 5-8 of us for Thanksgiving. The kicker. I thought I could have Wednesday off from work to prepare, but no dice! That really stinks.

Well, not sure how your garden went this year, but we're trying to incorporate as much from the garden as possible this year. Wife is even trying to incorporate stuff from the garden for her company's pot luck lunch. It's just going to be our household for Thanksgiving this year. Christmas will be a different story.
The turkey we got "free" from a special at HEB. Buy a fully cooked spiral sliced ham (we put that in the freezer for Christmas) and get the turkey free. There is an extra large Pennsylvania Dutch Crookneck squash that is almost completely buff colored in the garden as of today that'll make a great casserole similar to sweet potato casserole and it'll also make a great caramel pumpkin pie. I'm freezing green beans tonight that will be used in green bean casserole. I'll do some kind of greens dish. We have both broccoli raab leaves and komatsuma tendergreen that are at cutting stage. There's even a few volunteer bok choys that could be used. We'll make a lemon chess pie (basically lemon buttermilk pie) from the lemons that are now ripe.
There'll be a few dishes that will have nothing from the garden like broccoli & rice casserole, cornbread dressing and such, but maybe by next year even that'll have something from the garden.
If we don't frost out tonight, I may even make something along the lines of jalapeno poppers for the Cowboys game.

gardencrazy, then just keep it fairly simple as far as the menu since your time is limited . with that long of a drive I can relate to them not bringing any thing.
Once you get your menu figured out do as much of the prep before that day---- not only for instance baking pies but also chopping what can be done up days before , then bagging them and back into the fridge. I have in times past even done my stock used in different dishes the weekend before and just cooled it and poured into lidded containers and stored in fridge.
After seeing the prices in the grocery store today---I am soooo glad my freezer is full and my pantry full of jars of what we grow... thats about the only way one can save a few pennies I can see. plan your menu around what you do have stored , and what you can find on sale .

Thanks everyone,
I'm going to buy the turkey as well as non-perishable items this weekend. Tuesday evening I'll be fighting for the last of the fresh Brussels sprouts in the grocery store (as well as buying the perishable items). HA!
So the menu is set, the grocery list is made, the vast majority of the dishes have been washed and placed on the table.
