I love old fashioned dianthus. Gillyflowers (edible clove pinks), and sweet william most of all. This year I've a notion to play with picotee varieties though.
Laced Romeo is easy enough to find, as are some other fairly common varieties. What I am actively looking for is Velvet and Lace. So far where I have found them are totally unfamiliar, untried by me places. Has anyone ever had them, and where did you get them? I'd as soon buy from someplace reliable if I can manage it.
While I am thinking about it, what is your favourite clove type?

the only ones that have done well for me in my conditions are the old fashioned sweet williams. I did have some of the clove ones from my aunt but do not remember the name. they did well for a few years but then one year we were gone for 2 months and they died from lack of water. Son was watering for us and he forgot that area. It was on the far side and he just over looked it.

Dianthus usually grows quite well here, you just have to plant them where they get partial shade in the afternoon. I have an abundance of shade zones so they work very well indeed for me, and we get plenty of rain so I only have to do a minimum of watering most years. I do have some trouble getting seed out of them. I think it is mostly because the household loves them too well for cut flowers. Plus DH keeps taking the blossoms off the clove types to use in a bunch of different things. Cooking of course, but also wine making, perfuming, and magic. He always takes the best blossoms.
In my searches I found a dark picotee variety called Chianti. It looks very similar to Velvet and Lace. For quite a while Velvet and Lace was the only "black" picotee variety around.
