Black futsu squash didn't come up, at least after about 2 weeks. Did anyone else have a slow start from this? One of them sprouted tehn shriveled and died within a day. The butternut squash hasn't come up yet; the seeds are 2 years old. All the zucchini r. and one of the musquee de provence came up. I tried Black Futsu twice and got one squash total. Never tried a third time.

Finally got a zuke fruit pollinated - it was nice to see a fruit growing instead of falling off. So the first harvest will be soon, barring pickle worms or some other catastrophic disaster.
Yellow squash is slooow getting started this year, but finally seems to be growing well. Not sure what its problem has been. Hopefully it will set fruit soon - it has some female buds developing now.

Finally have several squash growing. Now the question is, growing for now or growing for the fall? If the weather stays on the cool side it'll grow fast.
The black futsu sprouted this time--I wonder if it just likes really warm soil? Watermelon seeds I planted literally months ago just came up.

The tatume are running but some of the vines that ran up on the compost pile have died at the tips. I wonder if the old dog has been lieing on it and rolled over on them.

Got 12 hills of different kinds of summer squash planted. I'm trying to figure out if I can squeeze some winter squash into the garden somewhere, maybe between the rows of sweetcorn. I really like winter squash so I'm going to make room somehow. Have to decide which varieties now.

Picked a couple of pretty small crooknecks and one tatume yesterday and fried them up to have with supper. YUM. I love fried squash! That was my first taste of tatume - it's very mild. I liked it, and it was nice to slice and fry. That plant is loaded with male flowers but I've only found one other female flower so far. Delicatas has 4 fruits, there are a couple each of spaghetti squash and boston morrow. No flowers yet on the kamo kamo. and even the crookneck is kind of skimpy in flowers. Hopefully the heat this week will spur them into action!

Cut zucchinni up like french fries. Sautee a half or quarter sweet onion in olive oil. Add the zuke and cook till fork tender but not soggy. Spices I've used red pepper flakes and basil.

I have a lovely, healthy looking zucchini plant that is throwing a ton of female blooms but almost no males. Then today (well, I guess that was yesterday now) I went out into the garden and saw that something ate one male bloom bud that the plant finally decided to throw. I think this is the third time this has happened - having a male bloom munched half or more off the day before it was ready to open. Slugs? Rodents? I dunno. It's frustrating, though.
At least I have been able to collect the unpollinated baby zucchini to eat. They are tasty, but tiny.

I picked and cooked the 4 delicatas yesterday because the plant looked like it was on it's way out. They were smaller - about the size of good baker potato. Steamed them last night and added butter, salt, and a hint of garlic powder. Very tasty. This is a very mellow tasting squash - I think you could do about anything with it since it has such a mild flavor. The boston morrow lost it's fruits, the kamo kamo still hasn't done anything, and the tatume and crookneck are being stingy. I planted all of these in 25 gallon grow bags with drip irrigation. I think next month I'm replanting in the ground to see if I can get a better showing in the fall.
