Tatume only. Don't know what Dad is planting in that line, probably yellow crookneck and whatever zuke seed he runs into first.

Dropped a whole 6 seeds of Costata Romanesco Zuchs today. I'll start dropping other winter squash later in the week hopefully. These are direct sown.

So far I only have plans for a yellow crookneck (Horn 'o' Plenty hybrid) and a zuke (Reward hybrid). My tomato area has expanded (greatly!) and I don't have a place for vining squash right now.
They are at seed leaves now...if they don't make it through the next couple of nights I will just drop a few more seeds.

For some reason I got a little squash happy this year and decided that I need to plant yellow crookneck, tatume, kamu kamu, spaghetti, boston marrow, and delicata. Funny thing is, I've only eaten the crookneck...the others are a direct result of me spending too much time with seed catalogues! lol

Funny thing is, I've only eaten the crookneck...the others are a direct result of me spending too much time with seed catalogues! lol I think you'll like the Tatume. Pick them baseball sized and treat like a zuchinni for taste. Be prepared - they ain't a bush. Little thin cables 'll be running for good distance. But they survived the squash vine borers. I hope you don't have SVBs show up in your neck of the woods. I have been unsuccessful with Boston marrow and Delicata. Spaghetti has been hit or miss. All due to SVBs. I haven't tried Kamu Kamu. Good luck this season!

Thanks for the advice TDD! So far I've been skipped by the SVB's....I sure hope that trend continues. I'll let you know how the Kamu Kamu does.

Cooked the last zucchini yesterday. It has more of the flavor of a pumpkin, so the last half of it (2 containers' worth) will be better served eating with brown sugar and cinnamon rather than with cheese and lemon pepper.

For this year I'm trying black futsu, musquee de provence, and the zucchini seeds from last year. It was close to freezing again this morning (car windshield frozen solid) but nothing is out yet.

Yellow squash babies survived the surprise frost last week. Zukes planted next to them did not. I replanted, and the new zukes are up.
Now I see a low of 37 predicted for Tuesday night, heh. Hope this baby zuke is tougher than its predecessor. But I will stick a pot or something over it as a cloche. If that doesn't work, I still have a few seeds left in the pack.

All squash babies are up except for tatume. It's getting exciting! I also noticed that the mequite trees are getting leaves, so we should be done with the freezes.

My Tatume were slow, but eventually they all came up. I set an old wooden ladder beside the hill, thinking it could work as a trellis since they like to send out long runners.

keep the faith...I gotta reseed mine....sighs A couple zucchini are up but the rest aren't. Everything is out a couple weeks earlier than I've done before so guess that accounts for things coming up slowly. I'm trying to resist the urge to water-- soil is moist underneath the hard top. If I'd planted earlier than I did, a frost would've carried everything away. It's going to be hot starting this weekend so all the squash like that, until July anyway. Good luck!

Little squishies is just beginning to try to run. There's a volunteer that I successfully (Yay!) moved out of the mater rows to the squash pit that is about 2 1/2 to 3 feet long and putting out a 2nd runner.
SVB activity has been seen. I've scraped SVB eggs off the zuchinni plants on 2 seperate days now.

Black futsu squash didn't come up, at least after about 2 weeks. Did anyone else have a slow start from this? One of them sprouted tehn shriveled and died within a day. The butternut squash hasn't come up yet; the seeds are 2 years old. All the zucchini r. and one of the musquee de provence came up.
