How's this for a smor...smorg...smorges........ah heck ya'll know what I mean: Capebuff's baked potatoes. Some Mystery Moschata soup from Sat night. Had grits left over from Sunday morning. Had beef stroganoff left over from Sunday night, but no noodles left over. So I'm putting those two together. A couple veggies, a meat, a grain, some dairy and some fat. That's pretty well rounded, right?

I totally forgot that I promised to make bao for Chinese new year. DH finally reminded me at about 5:30 this evening, and everybody made clear that they expected me to make them even if we ate at an ungodly late hour. OK, so who isn't a sucker for fresh bao? but whoa that was a piece of work to try and get done before midnight!
Generically bao is bread, in this case it is filled buns (dumplings) that are baked, though I normally steam the one kind as is usual for most types of bao like this. Our steamer is not big enough to do them quickly, so into the oven they go. The kicker is it is a yeast dough with two to three risings. So it was an evening of work fast and set the dough to rise, get the fillings made so they are cool enough to work with, stir the dough down and finish it, set it to rise, wait, wait, wait, punch it down divide it into 2 dozen pieces ( we are having big bao), roll them out, fill, fold and seal, then brush them down with an egg wash and get them into the oven.
We will eat before midnight, barely. we are having curried bean paste and cabbage bao, mock cha shao (BBQ not pork) bao, fried rice with vegetables, egg strands, and a stir fry with the rest of the BBQ not pork. DH makes the not meat himself, all I know it it is a cousin to saitan and includes nut meal, an egg, and Goya jambon stock mix.
My back aches and Ash has been just wooling me all night! Nothing quite like trying to roll out a very elastic dough and having a boy come up behind you and hug on you while wrapping himself and me in my mohair shawl. I bet there is at least one stray angora fiber in somebodies bao tonight!

Wow, impressive you were able to get that done! Especially with the helper.
When I make steamed dumplings (not often) I just take the easy way out and use prepared wonton wrappers. They're good, but I suspect your bao is several notches better.

Not a darn thing...DH has promised to take care of dinner so I don't have to cook on Valentine's Day. Ain't it grand? ;D DW is taking care of ours. I did just pull a cake (boxed mix) out of the oven. It'll get canned icing too.

I made a cake yesterday, too! I make mine from scratch (one of the kids is sensitive to stuff in the boxed mixes and canned frostings), but it's not hard. I found an easy one-bowl chocolate cake recipe that's really good. I made up some cream cheese frosting and filled and topped it with strawberries, since I had some berries I really needed to use. With the off-white frosting and red topping, it looks very Valentine-y. I tried to do a little simple piping, but it didn't come out that well. The cream cheese frosting softens fast as it warms to room temperature. Buttercream would have worked much better, but I wanted the flavor of the cream cheese frosting. So it's not a "post a picture to brag" cake, but it still looks tasty. The funny thing is that DH was late going to get the takeout, and so we never got around to dessert - the cake is sitting in the fridge untouched. Ah, well...we can cut into it after we eat our spaghetti tonight.

Dehydrating papaya and strawberries. Does that count? Yes, yes it does. However I just made some crumb topping for a coffee cake I got proofing, which is of course not nearly as healthy...

An experiment. Since I have a surplus of sweet potatoes, I'm using them instead of carrots or sweet potatoes in soup. Tonight turkey thigh with: vegetable stock, sweet potatoes, onion, celery, green curry paste, millet and other seasonings t.b.d. Aha! there is a dried chocolate habanero pepper on the computer desk!
