I have two daugthers that play soccer.
I like watching the womans world cup or the olympics, If you've ever seen Abby Womback turn herself into a human missle from the 18 and head a ball into the net that was kicked from midfield you'd be hooked too.

We call it "football" here, and the European championship will be in Poland and Ukraine next year. Don't think the home teams have much of a chance, though, but will be watching it on TV.

Apart from Poland-Greece at 6 pm local time (noon EST) there's also a match Russia-Czech Republic later today, and I hope the Czechs will win.

The match Poland-Greece ended with a draw 1:1 with both teams reduced to ten men most of second half. Yesterday evening Russia won with the Czech Republic 4:1 in Wroclaw near the Czech border, and they can be the best team in this group, too strong for Poland in the next match tuesday. That doesn't make them European champions though, there are still favourites like Spain, Germany and France. Today's most interesting match from my point of view is Denmark-Netherlands in Kharkiv, Ukraine. Even the winner of that match must later meet Germany, which is considered strongest in this group and plays with Portugal today.

So Denmark won over Netherlands 1:0. The merits can be discussed, but now Denmark is favourite to win the group together with the better of Germany and Portugal, which meet later tonight.

Germany is still favourite to win group B ("the death group") after its win over Portugal Saturday, but instead of the Netherlands, which are virtually out of the race (completely and formally if they lose to Germany Wednesday), after losing their first match to Denmark, the other possible winner is now Denmark, which cannot afford a loss to Portugal Wednesday, however.

Denmark became European champion 1992 from a total underdog position by winning its group after an initial loss to the hosts, Sweden and subsequently beating the Netherlands in the semifinal after penalties and Germany clean in the final . They didn't qualify, but were second in their qualification group after Yugoslavia, which was excluded by UEFA because of the civil war.

Denmark-Portugal is ongoing with 1-2 at halftime (which is now) after a Portuguese 2-0 lead. Portugal can not afford a defeat, which would send them definnitely home, and badly needs to win, which will throw the group wide open. Of course my favourites are the Danes, but it doesn't look too good for them. Netherland-Germany will be played later today, and a German victory will make them ready for the quarterfinals and Netherland to leave after the group games.

Portugal won over Denmark with 3-2 after Denmark caught an early Portuguese 2-0 lead, and Netherland-Germany ended with a German victory of 2-1. That leaves Germany as the leader with 6 points after two wins, Denmark and Portugal are exactly equal with 3 points after one win, but theoretically all teams can qualify for the quarterfinals or be sent directly home. The two remaining matches, Germany-Denmark and Netherland-Portual, will be played simultaneously on Sunday, making it very dificult to play tactically.

Tonight the Czech Republic won over Poland 1:0 in Wroclaw, and the match Russia-Greece ended with a Greek vitory (also 1:0) which was a major surprise. In the end, the Czech Republic and Greece qualified for the quarterfinal, and Russia and Poland were eliminated.

After the Czech Repulic lost their quarterfinal to Portugal yesterday, and Croatia, Ukraine, Russia and Poland were eliminated in group games, there are no Slavic countries at the championships. Germany playing quarterfinal with Greece today, and England are the only northern European teams left.
