What chain do you have in your area? I like small $ stores. Less Made in China crap and more useful stuff like Yarn and crafting supplies. When we lived on the farm, there was a privately owned chain (2 stores, lol) that was the absolute BEST $ store I've ever come across. They had an excellent selection of yarn, silk flowers, craft supplies and seasonal decorations. One of the few redeeming qualities of our time spent there.

You have to go in a couple of times a month to make sure you get the good deals at the dollar store. They buy up lots of stuff, so you never know what you'll find there. Sometimes I can find jars of lemon curd for a buck each, or marmalade. If you look through the tea towels, sometimes you can find good ones mixed in with the more cheaply made hand towels. They carry a lot of holiday decorations, if you pay attention you can get some cute items. I bought a large can of medicated powder a couple of weeks ago. It works just as well as that pricy Gold Bond medicated powder, and it only cost me $1.

is there such a thing as a quarter store?lol Well I got 6 tubes of tropical flavored lip balm that has pictures of lighthouses and says Michigan on it for a quarter a piece and my dear grand daughter just loves them(only gave her one, but since she eats them or loses them..) I figure I am set for a few months.. it should keep her from finding my good lip stuff for awhile! lol

The Five and Dime stores were very popular. In the early 60s, my neighborhood had a mom and pop penny candy store. My mother would let us kids use a nickle of our allowance each week to buy penny candy. We were allowed to walk to the store every Saturday morning. The elderly couple who ran the store were incredibly patient as we took forever to make our choices, changing our minds many times during the process of choosing which candies to buy.

We have a dollar store here and they got in a load of tie dyed skirts. I was in hog heaven! They were $3.00 each and I bought 4. This store isn't the true $1.00 kind; it's locally owned. They have some good bargains, though.

Loooove the dollar stores!!! ;D I like to look for different canned food from different places, and check out the crafts and toys. Never know what you'll find, and they always have something different. YES, there is a quarter store!!! Ours is run by a church, and everything is a quarter, no matter how big or small. I've found like-new clothing, what a way to build a wardrobe!!!!

Speaking as a tie-dyer, one of my best ever hits was a couple hundred pairs of child sized white 100% cotton Sunday go to meetin' girl ankle high socks.
They tie-dyed up real nice. Made a lotta hippy granmothers happy.

I love the dollar store! Also Dollar General and Family Dollar. Household stuff is so much cheaper!
I do fondly remember coming out of the candy store clutching my tiny brown bag full of half penny candy! A nickel could buy alot of licorice.

Our 99cent store has alot of US grown produce (including local avocados which the regular grocers do not sell- you have to know a grower to get any even the farmers markets and roadside stands usually only have imported) There are 4 different dollar stores in this town and at least 5 thrift shops. So much fun for us tightwad shopaholics, LOL

We have 5-6 different dollar stores in this area, but the real Bargain place is "Ollies-Good Stuff Cheap" I try to stop in at least once/week as they turn over merchandise really quickly. I love their book section, their kitchen section and even their food section. Gardening Bargans like you couldn't believe. Never know what you might find at Ollies! Enjoy! Camo

We love the dollar stores here too. We have Family Dollar, Dollar Tree and Dollar General. One thing I do like is that they allow you to use regular coupons so that lowers the price even more. The do sometimes get bargains on clothing too, they must get them as overstocked items.
We also have a Big Lots store, they carry furniture, clothing, food, etc. They can have some great deal too but if you see it you have to get it because often they buy overstocks and once they are gone there is no restocking.
