wonderred how you folks decide to lay out plans for you beds? just by when the plants come into bloom?colors primarily? by species? do you map it all out or just roll with it?

I generally map it all out most carefully according to height, bloom time, and color.
Then I swear a lot when my DH inevitably plants something smack in the middle of it all without asking me.

Since my entire vegetable garden is edged in flowers, they are chosen for various heights to avoid shading any part of the garden. Flowers, flowers everywhere but not a tomato insight right now....

Mine were all laid out according to plan but thru the years some things have spread by runners---some by seed-- and so now its all sorta mixed here and there. Usually I do manage to restore a semblence of order by digging out and replanting some of the worst offenders . We have a very long summer and I had planned different plants to bloom different times or tried to but some of the ones I ordered didn't bloom as stated in their information write up . I have perrenials and annuals mixed along with bulbs, corms and tubers.

When I first planted I mapped out everything just where I wanted them, over the years I've added stuff where ever I could a space. I also forget where the bulbs are and stick things in and have bulbs coming up through others but usually not a problem. I have daffodils and paperwhites coming up through zinnias still blooming so I need to cut them down as I know there are anemones that should be coming up among them too. I also have a ton of wildflowers coming up everywhere so I need to pull some of them out before the overtake everything else. I till have more daylillies and iris to plant somewhere too.

I don't seed and leave over winter-- the main reason being is that we tend to have false springs( Texas has really weird weather) and I have had things sprout just in time for one hellacious ice storm that can last for days. I do have some annuals that reseed , and those I either just thin or sometimes move some here and there where their seed didn't sprout.

All my flowers are in planter boxes in my backyard for me to enjoy. My yard is to shaded in front to grow anything. I do have two rose bushes that are huge that came with the house. A huge yellow rose and a red one.
I saw a Marigold coming up today because of the warm winter we are having.

I usually go with how much sun or shade is in the area to figure out which ones to plant where. This year, I plan to plant more flowers in my vegetables beds. I heard a great tip that not only do flowers add beauty but they attract those important pollinators and some help repel certain pests. I grew Borage herb for the first time last year. It was very vigorous with pretty purple blue flowers that are supposed to also be edible. One person wrote on a blog that borage planted with tomatoes has supposed to helped in the sweetness of the tomato. So I probably will test that one out this year!

I love Sunflowers, but here I think I best stick to the dwarf varieties. Although they might look good between the edge of the driveway and the fence? I'll look tomorrow.
Redperson, you've got lots of room. Why don't you do a mass planting of Sunflowers? I had one outside the back door of the farmhouse adjacent to the kitchen herb garden. The first couple of years, I planted sunflower seeds, after that they reseeded themselves. I had Lemon Queen, Ruby Queen and Black Oil there. I reserved the Mammoth for the cornrows in the main garden.
Another edible that has gorgeous blooms are Fava Beans. You could try some of those too. Baker Creek sells a couple of varieties I believe.
I really loved the perennial gardens at our last house but I don't have the space here to devote to mass planting of ornamentals. So I'll settle for a few and raise some hot peppers, Nasturtiums and Calendula amongst the roses.
