Baby pumpkins are running.
The biggest and most vigorous so far is Musquee du Provence. It's been damaged in a couple of spots by SVBs, but it's rooting along the vine and continuing along its merry way. The longest vine is 7'-8' so far. It has bloom buds; the first males should be opening in a couple of days. No female buds seen yet.
SVBs have tried to enter Seminole Pumpkin in a couple of spots, but since the stem is solid, they tend to get eaten by other critters because they can't get inside where it's safe. It's about 3' long and just starting to send out roots at a couple of leaf nodes. When those extra roots get in the ground, hopefully it will be off to the races.
The Long Island Cheese is performing about the same as the Seminole Pumpkin.
I have a question for anyone who has grown some or all of these varieties: Both the Long Island Cheese and the Seminole Pumpkin have light green leaves. Musquee du Provence has much darker green leaves and is growing more vigorously. However, each kind was planted in a hill prepared exactly the same way, they have been fertilized, watered, and mulched the same, and they get similar amounts of sunlight. Is this just a variety difference, or could I be missing something with the LIC and SP?

Is this just a variety difference, or could I be missing something with the LIC and SP? musquee de provence grows really fast as long as the temperature stays say below 90. It stopped growing during the heat wave we had last year & it was around Labor Day when I saw signs of life again. It has dark leaves. I don't know about the other. I grew cushaw and butternut squash last year & the cushaw turned pale and started struggling once it hit consistently over 100. The butternut squash was half and half; half suffered badly from the heat, and half was ok. Butternut squash don't start well in this kind of temperature that we're having here-- my seedlings died and I started over.

I'm guessing that it did. Still makes a nice pumpkin but it isn't watermelon shaped or striped like it's parent.

Quick question, how long after male blooms start, do the female blooms start? I'm growing my first pumpkins in over 30 years and the male blooms will start opening tomorrow or tuesday.

Mine are ignoring Charles' schedule. MDP and LIC have been blooming males well over a week and no sign of female flowers or even buds. I guess they want to take over more of the yard first!

Sometime that will happen you can go back in time to page 8 of this Thread and reads my post about only having Female Flowers that was why I started making my Crosses this year In the Pass I had Pumpkin vine with all Female with no Male Flowers and sometime all Male flowers with no Female flowers So it does Happen. last year when I grew the Queensland Blue I only had 1 female flower on the vine Charles
