I am trying to grow green striped cushaw (winter). I planted these seeds on June 1st or 2nd. My leaves are turning yellow. Is this a good thing? The plants are growing they are about 6 inches above the ground. I really wonder if they will make fruit. I have one other question. I had also planted some watermellons, but they got mowed down. Will they grow back and have time to grow and be harvested by October? Thanks for your help! Katb84 Generally they set fruit fast and grow fast, so if you haven't seen any cushaws start then you may not see any (well now that it's August that's a sure thing). Maybe they could use some fertilizer. Sometimes I think I water the pumpkins too much and the nutrients get washed out.

I was actually asking whether you saved seeds of the roach pumpkins for yourself, since they did so well!
Do you have a lot of SVB problems in your area? They are terrible here, constantly around from May until fall. The only winter squash I have ever had mature any fruit at all are Seminole Pumpkins, which are C. moschata.
If you also have really bad SVBs, and your pumpkins produced anyway, then yeah, I might try a couple of the roach pumpkins. (I don't have enough space for the big max types.)

Did butternut squash and cauliflower casserole-- so good we ate it all! Now that we're under half an inch of ice, will cook one of those or a couple of the futsu squash. Gulfcoast, you are right, I think you said they were hard to get production from. My challenge was on the front end. I had to sow seeds 2 or 3 times before they came up and stayed alive! SVBs did kill one of the main vines as well, though the rest of the plant persisted until October. There were two different looks to them-- some were like the pictures, while others were like miniature field pumpkins. The latter were smooth as well, which doesn't really fit.
They don't keep really well (get gray fuzz on the outside that doesn't really seem to hurt anything, yet) and they don't have a lot of meat but what they have is good. There are also a lot of seeds, for those like me who like to season and bake them for snacks.
