Cotton yarn makes dandy dishcloths and kitchen towels. The thicker types make area rugs.
My tomatoes are all tied up with old yarn cuz I hadn't found my garden velcro (not done unpacking from move yet) by the time the maters needed staking.

I was wondering if any one knows a good website to look at for beginning crocheting. I know how to make use a crochet needle and yarn but only know how to make a chain.

My wife learned as a child, but just in the last year she has taken it up again. Couple baby blankets, and afghan for our middle child in progress. She suggested www.crochetme.com which has a mix of free patterns and patterns, books and materials that can be purchased. They also have blogs and a forum if I read correctly. Might take a look to see if it's what you're looking for.

Find you a good craft store and browse the how-to books. Look at some books that have good pictures of the basic stitches, and a good index to find definitions quickly for those more complicated techniques. A good paperback one costs under $10. I've got several "encyclopedias" of design patterns: with the general instructions to create a particular type of pattern, I can create most anything from afgans to clothing to kiddies toys/animals, and more. Something I enjoy doing, but here in south Texas has limited value.

I've always wanted to learn how to weave blankets. Living where I do, there's alot of weavers around, I just haven't had the time to yet. Maybe someday....

Well...let's see...you can crochet it, knit it, spin it, macrame it, hook it, weave it, dye it...that's all I can think of now. So far I crochet, knit, hook, and macrame. I'm learning to spin and I have dyes so I can color the yarn I'm spinning. So far I haven't been able to convince DH to get me a loom...or a sheep or angora goats or angora rabbits or a lama or an alpaca...or a yak. But I'll keep working on it.

I also make dishrags with yarn, and dolly clothes and stuff for the grandkids dollhouses. How do you crochet plastic, anyway?? For rugs, don't they slide when you step on them??
