Aw, poor Trudy (and you). I hope the supplement helps her and you don't have to make that difficult decision for a long while yet.

The thyroid supplement is working. The vet did put her on special dogfood for low kidney function though.

I bought a "big" bag of the special dog food this week. $52.00 for 17 pounds! Hill's Science Diet. I opened the bag today and tried to pour a dish. Th bag split and kibble went everywhere.

She only eats dry dogfood at 2:00 a.m. and only if she a) thinks that I'm asleep and b) can't find anymore of the milkbones that she's hidden.

Over a year ago mine stopped being able to jump into the back of the station wagon. I said "Trudy! Hup!" like normal and she walked over to the passenger door where it was lower.

About 3 oclock Trudy had a bad Gran Mal seizure. I took her to the vet immediately. Unless there is a miraculous recovery I'll have her put down on friday.

Okay this morning the vet called and said that he kept her on phenobarbital all night and she had no more seizures. He said that she had idiopathic epilepsy(epilepsy with no known cause) We're going to try that for a while. She walks like she's tied one on and I have to give her a pill every 12 hrs plus or minus 1 hour. We'll see if she can adjust to this.

Not looking good. The phenobarbital makes her sleep so deep that she is losing control of her bladder. Including on my leather couch.

She's adjusted to the phenobarbital and thyroid supplement. She is currently on her three day post "grandmother visit" food strike. My mother heats up left over people food juice in the microwave and pours it over her dog food to get her to eat it. One problem is that she is drinking a lot of water. I have no idea what that means except that her kidneys might be getting worse or not.

At least another 2 this morning. I gave her another grain of phenobarbital. That may be too much but it seems that the standard dosage isn't working anymore.

Are you going to call the vet and ask about increasing her dose on an ongoing basis?

I'm going to monitor for another day or two. To be blunt, I can't afford another $350 bill to tell me that she is old. That's $135 in special dog food and prescriptions in the last week.

She had had a half hour seizure while on pheno barbital saturday night(1 gr dose). the vet offered to up the dose or try a different medicine but the root cause would still have been there. You can't put more sand in the hour glass. I gave her leftover food, medicine, dishes, and bedding to the county animal shelter. I kept her leash, new bed, and favorite blanket. I buried her in the back yard and will plant cannas on her grave this weekend.

When my cat Valerie died, I felt I'd lost a part of me. I had gotten her as a six-week old kitten - so small that she could stand on one of my hands - and I had her for over 20 years. I buried her under my Dorsett Golden apple tree. I think of her when I stand under the tree, when I take care of it, and when I harvest apples from it.
In the future, when you go out there to the canna bed and see the flowers in all their glory, you'll remember her and all of the joy she gave you when you were together.

Lin it ended up being yellow daffodils, bearded iris's, and snap dragons. We had a Golden Dorsett for many years but it was split in Katrina and slowly died over a few years.
