Pomegranite for me is a tender indoor (in winter) bonsai, it and Bay Laurel need a reduced watering scedule, that was for me with trees indoors a bit tricky. Persimmon, is a temperate tree, its got a much bigger footprint in north america. I think the last ones I got were mail order out of OIKOS Tree Crops--Kalamazoo MI, they have a web page. I'll look up OIKOS. Thanks for your help. Are you saying that pomegranates don't need much watering? That'd be nice. Here to live outside it'd have to be able to survive the occasional 1/4 inch of ice or a few days in the 20s. The coldest I've seen it this year is 14. The hottest I've seen is 112, so it's quite a temperature range.

I would not trust a pomegranate to survive temperatures lower than 32°F.
Indoors for a deciduous tree (even with supplemental light) is a study of compromises.
Pomegranate in its home range has as its dormant period, is its drouth period.

Thanks for the input! Since posting earlier, I've thought about pomegranate and persimmon here. Has anyone tried these, and where did you find one? . I went to OIKOS, and this year (spring '12) I don't see an offering of perssimon. Mussers forest however does. www.musserforests.com/

I think what is really needed here is sort of the opposite of a greenhouse, a place that can keep plants cool enough where they can produce for most of the year, but will at least keep it above freezing too. A garage would fit some of those requrements, but we don't have one.

Well, this will be a cherry less year! Just came from working in the front yard. The cherry trees have started leafing out 6 weeks early. Even the lilac bush has started to leaf out as well. Come on winter, please shock them back into hibernation!

I've been watching the rose of sharons and lilacs for budding, but so far, so good. Also hoping the wisteria didn't die off last summer; it was so pretty in spring.

The buds are definitely swelling here!
I was also noticing how much I will have to prune on my peach saplings this spring ... there are WAAAAYYYY too many branches starting, but the bunnies will love the treat!

they're multiplying? Awesome! Got a name for your orchard yet? G, you don't have feral hogs in your area do you? I keep seeing shows on TV about them in TX. I'd hate to see you go to all this work only to lose them to a grouchy porkchop.

My garlic is growing to field (albeit slowly). All my tree seeds are a slumber in their pots under some leafy mulch. Its still too early for them to be wakeful at the little house along the Appalachia.
its supposed to hit 60°F here today though.

You have 1,500 tree seeds to plant and you are asking about making a junkpile fence? OMG
Coppice, is your garlic showing new growth above ground?
