Coppice, is your garlic showing new growth above ground? Yes they are. Every sunny day I see another couple peeking above the mulch. FWIW I grew up in Elmhurst-Downers grove IL in the fities, if there aint no global warming, then were adrift on our way to the equator.

This winter is very similar to the winter of 1982 here. I drove the hour to my parents' house for Christmas and I wore a two piece suit with no overcoat and high heels. Left my boots at home. It was very warm that year.
It seems to me that folks only remember the big snowstorms or ice storms and forget the occasional balmy

Yep ... I can remember more years with balmy Christmas seasons than the cold and nasty ones! LOL More often than not, Christmas is shirt sleeve weather ;D

That's cuz you live in OK, Annclaire. Here, in the Great Lakes region, snow is the norm, well except for years like this one

Do you have red clay in your area of TX, Redperson? I know peaches grow well in OK cuz they have red clay like GA and Niagara. But for the life of me I can't remember what the dirt looked like in East TX?

I started some Nanking Cherry seeds today. A friend sent me some 3 years ago and I planted them outside where the squirrels helped themselves to the seeds. She sent more this week. She told me today that she had already stratified the seeds before she mailed them to me, to go ahead and plant right away. So I put them in starter mix today and here's hoping I too, have some little trees sprouting up soon. I only have room for a couple, the others I will see maybe if I can sell?

Coffeebreak makes an excellent point. taste is a good place to start shopping (or planting).
Plus asian markets are notorious for shopping off the loop and within their community. IE if it grows locally i somebody elses orchard, it might just grow in yours too.
Gotta love them China-men who keep sticking twigs inna pot.
Ahem, they may also be a market for your trees too...

Planted a pomegranate and a kieffer pear, we'll see how they do. I know the pomegranate will like the summer, not so sure about the occasional cold snap in the winter. The pear tree is starting to sprout leaves, which should be interesting since its pollinator tree (moonglow) hasn't done much at all. I know this year there'll be no fruit but I sure hope they bloom at the same time. The way our baby's eating, I'll need some peaches and pears by next year just to keep up with his appetite! No garden this time until summer. Will start seeds at the end of track season, somewhere between April 9 and the second weekend of May. Am trying to avoid the drought everyone's predicting through June and keep my sanity during the busiest part of the year. If it'll work, only time will tell.

so does any one know how long it takes from seedling to producing fruit on the different types of fruit. and does the new tree revert to root stock if ya plant a seed from a grafted varity.
